Douglas Steel Receives Recognition for Outstanding Safety Performance 
 
Douglas Steel is proud to announce that  for the third consecutive year the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Michigan, The Association of Union Contractors (TAUC) and the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) has awarded Douglas Steel their top safety award in 2013 recognizing us for our 2013 DART rate being 0.00 for both our fabrication plant
and our erection division.
 
This outstanding safety performance also earned an Honorable Mention Safety Achievement Award from the Construction Association of Michigan (CAM) as well as an award from Amerisure Insurance Company and David Chapman Agency, Inc.
  
Douglas Steel continues to be a leader in the industry in safety performance.  
We have worked 
for over six years without a lost time injury.
 
Our current Experience Modification Rate (EMR) is 0.71 for both our shop and field operations in 2014. These outstanding safety records is a direct result of our company's safety culture which instills an attitude of "Safety First" in all activities as well as our loss prevention and return to work programs.
Giving Back to The Community
 
Over the years Douglas Steel has had the privilege of working with non-profit organizations helping to enhance the lives of thousands of individuals and families every year. Recently Douglas Steel had the honor of receiving the Highfields Partnership Award from Highfields, a private non-profit organization based in Lansing, MI for donating material and labor necessary for improvements that were needed at their Lansing facility. Back in 2002 Douglas Steel had the privilege of donating material and labor for construction of a new pedestrian bridge over Telford Lake at Highfields' Onondaga, MI Facility.        
Douglas Steel is Pleased to Announce Promotions of Key Personnel
Lawrence Kruth.
Lawrence Kruth, P.E. has been promoted to Vice President responsible for coordinating all company activities. He will also be responsible for ensuring the companies performance is achieved with exceptional customer satisfaction, ensuring that the company's Quality Management System and Safety Program is embraced and adhered to by all departments within the organization. Larry is a member of Douglas Steel's Board of Directors and has over 30 years experience in structural engineering. He previously held the position of Vice President of Engineering, Technology and Safety. Larry is also a Registered Professional Engineer in Michigan and Pennsylvania. He is a member of the AISC Board of Directors and serves on numerous committees involving research, specifications and safety within the structural steel industry.
Richard Steffens
Richard Steffens has been promoted to
Engineering Manager. Rich will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the engineering department. His primary responsibilities will include scheduling and monitoring all engineering department activities, establishing and monitoring connection design and framing methods to ensure compliance with both AISC and project requirements. He will also be responsible for developing and maintaining proper department staffing. Rich began his career with Douglas Steel in 1992 as an Engineering Aide. He previously held positions as Detailer and Engineering Job Captain. He holds an Associate's Degree in Architectural Technology from Lansing Community College. He also serves on the User's Group Advisory Board for our SDS/2 detailing software.
 Carrie Colwell
Carrie Colwell, P.E. has been promoted to
Chief Engineer. Carrie will be responsible for all engineering design for Douglas Steel. Carrie joined Douglas Steel's engineering department in 2008. Some of the notable projects she has worked on include the new Headquarters for Accident Fund Insurance Company, UM Football Stadium West Side Expansion, TB Simon Power Plant Modification, Lansing BWL REO Town Power Plant, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac and the DMC Cardiovascular Heart Hospital Bed Tower and Pedestrian Bridge.She holds a Bachelor of Science, Civil and Environmental Engineering degree from the University of Michigan and has over 17 years experience in the engineering field. Carrie is an active member of the Structural Engineers Association of Michigan (SEAMI) and the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC).
Christopher Lowe
Christopher Lowe has been promoted to Quality and Safety Manager. Chris will be responsible for ensuring that Douglas Steel's Quality Management System is adhered to by all departments within the organization. He will also be responsible for managing our Corporate Safety Program, developing and administering required procedures, training, reporting and incentive programs to ensure the company's quality and safety policies and accident prevention programs are carried out in accordance with Douglas Steel's Quality Management System, OSHA and MIOSHA regulations and standards. Chris has been with Douglas Steel since 1995 and previously held positions as Engineering Aide, Detailer, Materials Buyer, Estimator and Project Manager. He has completed training in first aid, CPR, AED and has completed several General Education classes at Lansing Community College. He is currently pursuing AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification. 
Randy Loll
Randy Loll has been promoted to Materials Manager. Randy will be responsible for purchasing all raw material required for fabrication of all projects, managing the companies stock inventory, ensuring that all materials comply with project specifications and the companies Quality Management System, preparing cutting orders for the shop and proper lotting to ensure maximum productivity to meet contract scheduling requirements. Randy joined Douglas Steel in 2011 as a Detailer/Checker in the engineering department. He holds an Associate's Degree in the School of Drafting Technology from the National Education Center. Randy has over 20 years experience in the structural steel industry.
