Outreach - St. Paul's, Holdenville

Hello Everyone!!

A while back I asked that people send in descriptions of their parish's Outreach programs, so that I might publish them and we could all share in some new ideas for helping others.

Yesterday, I received an amazing description from Kathy Radach
of St. Paul's Holdenville and St. Mark's Seminole. When you read her description what their Outreach programs consist of, you will be astonished that all of these efforts are being done by just a handful of people, and yet their effects are so far reaching!
Please take a moment and read Kathy's account. You will feel better for having done so, and you may even pick up a few ideas for your own parish! And don't forget.... send me your ideas for Outreach!

Be safe and be kind.

Anne

Monday April 21

Dear Anne:

Many months ago I asked for your address so I could send you an update on Outreach Ministries at St. Paul's Holdenville, and St. Mark's Seminole. Here are my musings at last.

Both St. Paul's Holdenville, and St. Mark's Seminole, are tiny rural parishes located about 75-100 miles southeast of Oklahoma City. Each of them has an average attendance of about 10 on a
Sunday morning. At St. Mark's outreach is often done as a group, whether it is shopping for Angel Tree gifts for Prison Fellowship ministries, or preparing for the annual Soup and Sermon series during Holy Week, or supporting Make, Bake and Grow, the annual winter bazaar that provides funding for all the ECW benevolence giving.

At St. Paul's, on the other hand, Outreach is more likely to take the form of supporting enthusiastically the individual ministries of other parishioners. For example, we have a recycling enthusiast in the congregation, so we bring items such as plastics, glass paper, styrofoam, and aluminum to the parish hall where he collects them, takes them to his sorting station in his
garage and then transports them to recycling points in or near OKC.

Another member has been active in the Boy Scouts. The dentist in our congregation has done dental checks so the Scouts could achieve their Personal Health merit badge. Two of our artistic
members provide entries for the Art Society events. We all make it a point to get to their showings. Two of our members are Native-American. They are active in that ministry... for Kairos, we bake cookies and attend Closing Ceremonies at Davis Correctional Center, near Holdenville. One member is part of a team that provides weekly worship services at the prison.

We have rolled cutlery napkins for Open Gate. We have held monthly community dinners to increase fellowship in the community. We still actively seek opportunities to serve in our
community. As a full group, our focus recently has been on Prison Ministry. The Angel Tree program is being coordinated through St. Paul's this last year for all the children of incarcerated parents who live in Hughes and Seminole Counties. St. Paul's held a Party that was so much fun we plan to do it again next year. Our next goal is to send the kids to summer camp!

So, you see we are small but active. the Holy Spirit provides us with plenty of opportunities to make a difference in the communities where we have been planted.

Blessing,
The Rev. Kathy Radach

Enneagram Workshop Offered

The Enneagram is "a geometric figure that delineates the nine basic personality types of human nature and their complex interrelationships." While the Enneagram suggests that there are nine basic personality types of human nature, there are, of course, many subtypes and variations within the nine fundamental categories. Nevertheless, the assertion of Enneagram theory is that these nine adequately map out the territory of "personality types."

The Enneagram is also a symbol that maps out the ways in which the nine types are related to each other. This is the aspect of the Enneagram most people are familiar with because it offers them a framework for understanding themselves and everyone they deal with. As a psychospiritual typology, the Enneagram helps people to recognize and understand an overall pattern in human behavior. External behaviors, underlying attitudes, one's characteristic sense of self, conscious and unconscious motivations, emotional reactions, defense mechanisms, object relations, what we pay attention to, our spiritual potentials and much more-are all parts of a complex pattern that forms each personality type. Therapists, business counselors, human resource directors, and spiritual seekers from around the world are all finding the Enneagram to be immensely useful for self-understanding and personal growth. Always remember however, that the Enneagram does not put you in a box - it shows you the box you are in and the way out!

The Enneagram as a Tool for Personal Transformation will be offered:

Friday, September 5, 2014 from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM

Youth Ministry News

Youth
Happening Scheduled for August 1 - 3

Happening

Happening is a Christian experience presented by teenagers who are in or have completed grades 10,11, or 12 and is led by other teenagers with the help of clergy and lay adult leadership.

The purpose of the Happening - A Christian Experience
sm program is to be one of the instruments within the Anglican Tradition to renew the Christian Church in the power of the Holy Spirit, in order that the Church may respond more readily to its call to spread the Kingdom of God throughout the world.

Happening - A Christian Experience
sm seeks to achieve this purpose by bringing young persons and adults to a fuller personal knowledge of and relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, and to a deeper level of commitment and apostleship.
- from Standards and Guidelines for conducting the weekend

What can I expect at a Happening weekend? During the Happening weekend (usually beginning Friday evening and continuing through Sunday afternoon) there are activities designed for fun and Christian community building among participants.

Throughout the weekend a series of talks are presented by youth and clergy to logically present the elements that define a mature profession of faith and the catechism process. The presentation of key talks by youth using personal life experiences is intended to offer Christ's message to attending Happeners on a level they can understand, and to answer many of the faith questions youth struggle with daily. Talks about church teachings and their importance in the lives of youth attending the weekend are presented by clergy in a fair and friendly manner. Each talk is a critical building block in the creation of the Happening message. The entire series of talks is given in a sequence that is intended to guide Happeners by opening an avenue of discussions to help them verbalize and internalize their faith questions in a safe environment and hopefully lead to a renewed or new relationship with Christ.

Caritas, or signs of God's love through letters, messages and small tokens are distributed at times over the weekend to deepen fellowship, and to demonstrate the knowledge and support that comes to each weekend from the "wider church."

New Education for Ministry (Efm) After Graduation Program

Essential Practices of Christian Disciples is a new program
for EfM graduates offered by The Beecken Center at The School of Theology in Sewanee, TN. Building on what they have absorbed and practiced about community and ministry in EfM, mentors will be equipped to help groups discover and practice new skills needed to carry that ministry into the world as part of a team.

Essential Practices will be a 36 week program that includes the theological reflection and group formation components of EfM,
the ministry discernment and design practices drawn from VocationCARE, and the team development and community organizing practices of the Leadership Development Initiative from the Diocese of Massachusetts.

Training for mentors of Essential Practices of Christian Disciples is offered this year for those interested in piloting this new curriculum.

This training is open to EfM mentors with at least 2 years mentoring experience.
