Saint Simeon's was one of 24 nonprofit finalists at the ONE Awards dinner at Tulsa's Southern Hills Country Club on April 20. Finalists were divided into eight mission categories - Seniors, Arts and Humanities, Community, Education, Health Services, Self-Sufficiency, Sports and Recreation, and Youth Development. Saint Simeon's extends its warm congratulations to the overall winner of the Charles Schusterman Award for Excellence, Tulsa's own Little Lighthouse.
"As a senior living community of choice for Oklahomans, Saint Simeon's is honored to be awarded Nonprofit of the Year in the Senior category," said Lindsay Hurley Fick, President and CEO of Saint Simeon's. "We are thankful to be recognized for fulfilling Saint Simeon's mission, offering superior care and service to the seniors we are privileged to serve."

Safeguarding God's Children - A Celebration in the Diocese
Over the past 3 years, this diocese has almost tripled the number of individuals who have completed Safeguarding God's Children. Over 1,600 individuals and clergy have participated in the 2 1/2 hour training and now serve as fresh eyes and ears in seeing that the children in this diocese are provided safe and secure congregations and camp settings.
This diocese takes seriously our obligation to provide and train individuals. All individuals who work with infants, children, or youth, and all clergy are required to receive the training and to re-certify every 4 years.
Let's keep up the good work! |

Please join us daily on facebook "http://stpaulsokc.org/whole-creation" http://stpaulsokc.org/whole-creation for daily meditations. Below is a meditation/ reflection posted this week by Steven Charleston.
Have you ever seen the turquoise ice? Inside the great glaciers, like jewels buried within them, is ice the color of turquoise, that beautiful light blue, almost hypnotic in color. I was amazed when I first saw it. Old ice, I was told. Crystals compressed to reflect light in that way. Ice is water stored, saved by Nature for a reason, at times over centuries. Steven
IMPORTANT DATE: Please join Whole Creation Community, the Oklahoma Association of Conservation Districts and the Oklahoma Conference of Churches for the First Day of Prayer for Rain May 1st in the Bishop W. Angie Smith Chapel on the OCU campus. The service will begin at 6:00 pm. We hope to see you there.
Focus Story: Submitted by Kalin March, St. Paul's Cathedral
To a generation that will be held accountable and responsible for the state of the earth in upcoming years; what does environmental stewardship entail, how does it look, and what is the perception of this charge are all important considerations. Stewardship inclines us as a community to love and care for God's creation, humanity and earth and the creatures placed here under our dominion. So often though, the convenience of a world that is polluting the air, consuming the water supplies, and endangering the ecosystem unnecessarily destroys the environment. We must progress as a community to salvage the world and its resources to establish a more sustainable planet, as well as more practical life-styles. The youth of the church can be utilized if given the resources and means, and given encouragement and guidance. The upcoming generation cares desperately for the earth, we would like to see it flourish and continue to grow. This would then allow humanity to turn its attention to itself that we may feed the hungry, house the homeless, and nurse the poor; in turn, allowing us to love God more fully. The Adopt a Street project, a ministry of the Whole Creation Community, allows involvement in caring for the planet while giving children, youth, and adults a chance to give back in a small way that can make a profound impact. This simple project supports unity as groups walk the length of 4th through 16th streets along Robinson, in Oklahoma City, picking up trash, and other waste harmful to all of God's creation. Sometimes empty alcohol containers are found hidden in the bushes. Pizza boxes and paper can be found blowing through the streets. This project is more than "simply" an environmental one, in the sense of "being green", but it also allows the youth to see the current state of humanity and the environment that humanity itself is living in. This is important. We can't stay sheltered forever. The world is imperfect, harsh, and sometimes cruel, but that is why we need God. This is why we owe it to Creation to do even the very simple little things. There is more than "nothing to be done". There is everything to be done, and the youth is up to the challenge with God's support and unconditional love. We simply need to be challenged, and we can change the world.

Retablos, Lamina's, Votive Paintings, and Nichos
A Retablo or lamina is a Latin American devotional painting, especially a small popular or folk art one using iconography derived from traditional Catholic church art on tin.
Some, called santos, were paintings of saints. These were used on home altars for worship. Other kinds were purchased from artists and left at shrines or churches to express thanks. These are mostly called retablos by the people who made and used them. But sometimes they are called ex-votos,a Latin word meaning "from a vow". This word shows how these small paintings were left at shrines to express thanks for some divine favor.
The main production areas were located in central Mexico. They were made mostly by people without formal art training, yet the paintings reflect strong, sincere religious feelings. They represent images of Jesus, Mary, saints of the Catholic church, and angels. Retablos were placed on people's home altars. They were used for personal devotion. People directed their prayers to these images. Retablos were a popular folk art of the 19th century, and reflect the values and customs of the society that produced them. The painters looked to religious art imported from Europe and painted inside churches to reproduce the specific clothing, symbols and other details associated with the various saints and Madonnas.
Votive paintings (sometimes called retablos in central Mexico) are also painted on tin and tell stories. Some express thanks or tell about a miraculous recovery. Usually the story is written on the painting and includes the date of the event and the name of the person who commissioned the painting. Some depict accidents, or illnesses. Often a small picture of the saint or religious figure who saved the person is shown in the votive painting. These are ways people were able to share their stories and publicly give thanks. The paintings were hung inside churches or shrines. In Peru, Retablos are wooden boxes filled with brightly colored figures arranged into intricate narrative scenes of religious, historical and everyday events important to the indigenous people of the highlands of Peru.
In South America, it is common to see decorative boxes called "nichos" set upon tables and pedestals to display religious icons. These boxes may serve as a religious altar (to mark a significant religious event) or to honor a patron saint.
Spanish retablos of the Late Middle Ages and Renaissance grew extremely large and elaborate, typically using carved and gilded wood, and rising as high as 40 feet or more.
