Episcopal Youth Leadership Academy (EYLA) Holds Third Meeting

On January 5, the Episcopal Youth Leadership Academy held it's third gathering at Church of the Redeemer Episcopal Church, in Oklahoma City. Aaron Mooney was the facilitator for this weekend and began with some communication exercises.

Communication exercisesParticipants performed various activities in teams either with a blindfold or back to back wherein they gave descriptions on how to make the exact thing using the Lego building blocks in their boxes.

The next part of the event dealt with budgets and money - real world money - issues. This included figuring out a monthly budget based on actual figures. Aaron used the video clip from The Cosby's about Theo's ambitious desire to live on his own and not go to college.   We then looked at the difference between wants and needs. The evening
working on a budget
ended with the group watching the video, Brewster's Millions.

Sunday morning, we continued our time together looking at time management and how difficult this can be.
Wants verses needs
The group were assigned one of three options for their homework:
Design and complete a month's budget for their family's food expense; or talk to their congregation's treasurer about the budget, where the income comes from, what expenses are there and what surprised you; or do and maintain a time management calendar for the spring semester. The group will report back on their project at our next meeting in March.
Congregational Development Officer Kicks Off New Blog

Kevin Martin, Diocesan Congregational Development Officer, has started a new blog. Why? Whole Creation Community - Light Up 2013 with Action!

whole creation community

The following meditation written by Ferrella March (St. Paul's Cathedral-OKC) was posted the week of January 6, 2012 on the Whole Creation Community Facebook page.  Please continue to join Whole Creation Community in daily devotion  http://stpaulsokc.org/whole-creation

I still have my Christmas tree up which illuminates the room in hues of blue. I still have my lights in the yard and on the wreath that hangs above the window sill. Although Christmas has come and gone, the star still shines bright in the night sky. As gifts of the season become a thought of the past, the future of creation depends on how we choose to act. We have waited with anticipation. We have followed the star to a destination. We have come to realize our purpose in this life as stewards of creation. What will our actions be as we enter into 2013? Ferrella

Focus Story

This week's focus story is submitted by Everett McPhail who is a parishioner at St. Paul's Cathedral in OKC. Over the years, he has created reusable items from plastic shopping bags. Some of these items include shopping bags, purses, hats, belts, and sleeping mats for homeless individuals. It all begins with "plarn" which is a sort of plastic yarn ball. The "plarn" is used to crochet wonderful items that can be reused instead of ending up in a landfill.  Below is Everett's story.  Maybe this is an activity your congregation would be interested in doing this year.

A Little "Plarn" Goes a Long Way Toward Caring for God's Creation

Submitted by:  Everett McPhail-St. Paul's Cathedral, OKC

I have been scuba diving since the age of 13 and have had the opportunity to dive many different places throughout my life. I feel that one of the finest examples of God's most beautiful work can be found in the depths of our oceans and lakes. There are many places that I like to return to whenever I have the opportunity. Over the decades of diving, I have personally observed the destruction and aftermath that we as a society have done to our oceans and environment. Seeing first -hand the large areas of reef structures destroyed, animals laid to waist and pollution going into our ecosystem saddens me. This brought me to the point where I felt we as a society had an obligation to make a change. One of the largest pollutants that we as a society contribute on a daily basis is the disposal of single use plastics. These are the plastics that we use throughout our daily lives that have been made for our convenience; unfortunately that convenience comes with a heavy price. The plastic bottles and bags are not only filling up our land fills, but our oceans too.

I knew I wanted to make a change, and what better place than to start with myself and teach others along the way.  A small group of friends and I started to educate others while reinventing the use of plastic items and utilizing these items to the betterment of others.  We encourage a group of people to bring all of their plastic shopping bags and have a great day of fun and fellowship. At the same time we teach people how to take their plastic sacks and turn them into "plarn" a plastic yarn. We then utilize the plarn to crochet various items that can be reused in daily life. We often make shopping bags, coozies, hats, belts, cinctures, purses the sky is the limit. All the money raised from items sold is then given to local food banks, shelters, or environmental causes. One of our favorite items to make is a full length sleeping mat which can be donated to shelters for distribution to those in need.

We find that these events are not only fun and helps a great cause, but it is a good opportunity to educate others on the many things we as individuals can do to help. This instantly has a multifaceted benefit to our society. We educate, fellowship, reinvent the use of an item, all while helping others in need while helping the environment.

New Resource for Holy Week

What wondrous loveWhat Wondrous Love is Holy Week in Word and Art, is a 41-minute DVD presentation of key scripture passages and events in the biblical story of Holy Week. Each biblical text is illustrated and interpreted by artwork from John August Swanson and receives scholarly commentary from members of the faculty at Candler School of Theology at Emory  University. There are 6 chapters of the DVD, approximately 7 minutes each.

New Resources

Holy Baptism - A Guide to this Celebration of New Life - DVD and Discussion Guide - by Pastor John K. Stendahl (Lutheran Church of the Newtons - ELCA) and Father Thomas J. Scirghi, SJ (Associate Professor of Theology at Fordham University. Video is a total of 60 minutes with 16 question sessions. Book titled My Baptism Book is a collections of prayers, psalms, and Bible stories and is a perfect give for a child being baptized, could be utilized as opening or closing thoughts to your class.

Godly Play Resource

One of the most expensive pre-made resources for Godly Play is Noah and the Ark materials. In Monday night's The ONoah's arkklahoman was information on ordering a pattern for the ark and animals. The ark is 27 x 11 and the animals are 4 x 4. The pattern is being ordered by the Diocese to be a part of our materials making options.

If you would like to use this pattern, just contact Sabrina Evans (sevans@epiok.org) or call 232 4820.

Prayerwalking

Are you a walker? Do you include prayer in your walk time? They you maybe a prayerwalker!

Prayerwalking or "praying on site with insight" is about intercession. Those who practice it believe that God answers prayer, and that prayer is one of the most powerful tools of evangelism that God has given us. Those who have participated in prayerwalks can share some incredible stories of how God moved before, during, and after their prayerwalks. God honors prayer because it focuses on Him and not on us. Prayerwalking is not a program, a process, nor a prayer event. It is intercession that transforms the intercessor and his/her praying. Let me encourage you to begin where you are.

Different Types of Prayerwalking

There are several types of prayerwalking. Strategic," involves praying from strategic locations within the target area. Examples of "strategic prayerwalking" could include parks, city squares, high points, crossroads, and other high traffic areas.

"Key Building" Prayerwalking requires entrance into a building. The prayerwalk is conducted from within the building. Examples of this type of prayerwalking could include schools, churches, government agencies, factories, and businesses.

The most common is the "Street" Prayerwalking. This is conducted by walking, driving, or riding through a target area and praying. Many times the emphasis is to pray for everyone on every street of the target area.

For more information, there is a book titled Prayerwalking: Praying Onsite with Insight by Steve Hawthorne and Graham Kendrick and can be found at Amazon.com.
