Diocese Welcomes Clergy from Uruguay!

clergy conference2

This past week, the Diocese of Oklahoma hosted five clergy from the Diocese of Uruguay, our companion diocese. Diocesan Bishop Miguel Tamayo, Suffragan Bishop Gilberto Porcal along with three priests: The Rev. David Waszuk, The Rev. Livan Martinez and The Rev. Alejandro Manzoni traveled to Oklahoma to participate in the annual Clergy Conference at St. Crispin's attended by priests and deacons from throughout the diocese.clergy conference3

The visit by the clergy of Uruguay was an

opportunity for clergy of Uruguay and Oklahoma to learn about each other, the ministries of the respective dioceses, to share ideas and continue to explore ways to further our shared call to mission.

Fr. LivanThe Uruguayan clergy spent time visiting communities and congregations in the diocese. St. Mary's, Edmond; All Souls, Oklahoma City, St. Patrick's, Broken Arrow; and St. Philip's, Ardmore served as hosts. Bishop Miguel accompanied Bishop Ed on his visitation to St. Luke's, Chickasha. The clergy not only worshipped with the individual congregations, but spent time in fellowship with parishioners.

Our visitors commented repeatedly about the generous hospitality they received during their visit. One of the clergy stated, "There is a genuine spirit of love and care in this diocese and in this state." Bishop Procal

We are thankful to all the clergy and congregations that not only hosted our guests, but who also provided the financial contributions that made this visit possible: St. Patrick's, Broken Arrow, St.Philip's, Ardmore; St. Mary's, Edmond, St. Mark's, Seminole; St. John's, Norman; ; All Souls, OKC; St. Paul's, Holdenville; Grace Church, Muskogee; St. Paul's Cathedral, OKC and St. Basil's, Tahlequah.

adopt a streetIt Must Be a Sign

On September 29, regardless of the rain clouds that threatened the morning sky, a group of parishioners met at St. Paul's Cathedral in OKC for their first Adopt a Street cleanup event.  Bill Cunningham (a parishioner at the Cathedral) has spent the last several months coordinating with the city of Oklahoma City, the Cathedral vestry, and parishioners to make this event possible.  Supporting Bill in his efforts, David Beatty, John Koons, Scott Woods, Mary Jewett, Susanna Lemasters, Jim Dorsey, Ferrella March, and Dean Lindstrom strolled the few blocks from 7th to 4th Street to bless our new sign.

Dean Lindstrom reminded us of that we are fellow workers in God's creation and that we have a responsibility to care for the Earth and all that make Her home.  One outward sign of our reverence for creation is acting to sustain our natural resources.  This involves developing a stewardship plan that also considers the needs of the community.  The Cathedral has identified the need to keep the streets around our Cathedral litter free and to provide leadership in the community.  To carry out this mission, the Cathedral has committed to adopting North Robinson Street from 4th  to 16th Street.

St. Paul's is your Cathedral.  Please join us for our next event which we plan to hold on a quarterly basis.  Each event will be announced in the Diocesan newsletter, on the Whole Creation Community facebook page and the Cathedral website.  You are also encouraged to check with your local communities to see if they have an Adopt a Street program.  Activities such as this build community and foster responsible stewardship of our natural resources.

For more information, contact March [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>   or call the Cathedral office at 405-235-3436.

Episcopal Disability Network Gets New Website

To help more people reach Christ's table, and serve there, a new website has been launched for the Episcopal Disability Network: www.episcability.org.

This revised resource includes guides for architectural accessibility, and inclusive language; a lending library, with items in large print and Braille; diocesan and seminary contacts; theological and scriptural references; and information on programs and ministries by and with persons with disabilities.

Our own Twila Smith of Norman, who is in the aspirancy process, proposed her ideas for more effectively sharing existing information to the Evangelical Education Society of the Episcopal Church. A grant from EES, and additional support from Digital Faith, a web management system, helped the new site become a reality.

MIQRA

MIQRA MEETING: DECEMBER 15TH 12 NOON DIOCESAN OFFICES. If you want to be in on the planning for this event, come join us.

You have been seeing the word and some information but here's more! A Miqra (meek rah) is a public reading of Scripture.

Our Miqra is to be offered January 19 - 21, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, BibleEdmond. We actually begin on Friday (the 18th) morning, with the help of volunteers - college students, youth ministers, and other volunteers - and the reading begins.

A small group of youth who have been working on the planning will get together on Friday after school and do the prep work to ready for everyone. We will share a meal together and worship together. The reading continues.

The event officially begins on Saturday (the 19st) at noon. Everyone who comes will have an opportunity to sign up to read scripture, but it is not mandatory that you read. Reading slots are 1 hour in length and a maximum of three can sign up for a particular hour.

Periodically throughout the weekend, we will pause in our various program activities to listen to the reading. Participants are also given free time where they can choose to sit in the nave and listen to the reading. Reading continues around the clock from the time we start until finished. These readings are usually covered by parents and adult volunteers.

Now, while the reading is going on in the nave, we are offering all types of workshops for the participants. They will have "tribe time" in which they will engage in discussions or activities. We will have games, movies, crafts, and of course, food.

We will end on Monday morning at 9:30 with a closing worship service. We will read the final chapter of Revelation together as a group at our closing worship.

So what are we asking of you? Hopefully, you will want to attend and participate. Maybe you play a musical instrument and would like to be a part of that offering. Talk it up with the youth in your congregation. Get them excited about this 1st Miqra. Get people registered!

Adults - we need lots of help for this. You don't have to be involved in Youth Ministry to participate. Volunteer to be a tribe leader, reader, provide snacks, or even lead a workshop!

This promises to be one of the best events we have ever offered!

Who is the Young Child?

I was at a Formation Leaders' Training Course for Catechesis of the Good Shepherd last week. One of our classes talked about who is the young child and why would Jesus tell his disciples they must become like a little child. Here are some of the insights offered:

1.  The child is so in the present - they immerse in the now.

2.  They are accepting and embracing.

3.  They incarnate the environment.

4.  The child doesn't judge - they have no "ism."

5.  They love unconditionally.

6.  They are innocent.

7.  They forgive - they "let it go" - they move on.

8.  They endure and accept

9.  They have an incessant curiosity - everything is filtered through wonder. Everyday is special to the child. They have a vibrating spirit. The child is a creator.

10.  The child falls in love with their environment - there is intense concentration and squeals of delight.

11.  They show compassion, charity, and generosity - respect - when we step in and take over, we are dismissing their work. A child is cooperative, not competitive.

12.  The child shows the power of love - they see beauty for what it is without reservation.

13.  They put their maximum effort into their work. - They are not looking for praise, recognition or short cuts.

14.  The show persistence.

15.  They offer no hypocrisy or double standards - they are truthful.

This list has 15 items, and I find it hard many times to do more than 1 or 2 of these things. How about you?  Sabrina Evans

Prayer for Autumn Days

God of the seasons, there is a time for everything; there is a time for dying and a time for rising. We need courage to enter into the transformation process.Autumn leaves

God of autumn, the trees are saying goodbye to their green, letting go of what has been. We, too, have our moments of surrender, with all their insecurity and risk. Help us to let go when we need to do so.

God of fallen leaves lying in colored patterns on the ground, our lives have their own patterns. As we see the patterns of our own growth, may we learn from them.

God of misty days and harvest moon nights, there is always the dimension of mystery and wonder in our lives. We always need to recognize your power-filled presence. May we gain strength from this.

God of harvest wagons and fields of ripened grain, many gifts of growth lie within the season of our surrender. We must wait for harvest in faith and hope. Grant us patience when we do not see the blessings.

God of geese going south for another season, your wisdom enables us to know what needs to be left behind and what needs to be carried into the future. We yearn for insight and vision.

God of flowers touched with frost and windows wearing white designs, may your love keep our hearts from growing cold in the empty seasons.

God of life, you believe in us, you enrich us, you entrust us with the freedom to choose life. For all this, we are grateful.

 Amen.
