Ask the Expert:

Can  you have uterine cancer of the myometrium without it being in the endometrium?   Can uterine cancer start in the myometrium?  Is endometrial cancer just one type of uterine cancer?  Are there others?

After hearing these questions from session participants, we reached out to our presenter, Dr. Kristen Lyerly (Bellin Health), for clarification. She responded:

Dr. Lyerly
"It is confusing.  Different cancers can be found in different parts of the uterus.  The cervix gets cervical cancer.  The lining of the uterine cavity is the endometrium - it can get endometrial cancer.  This is the most common type of female cancer, and it typically presents with abnormal bleeding.  The muscle of the uterus, which lies below the endometrial layer, is the myometrium. This can get different types of cancers, most commonly sarcomas.  There are other types of "uterine" cancer, too.  But when we talk about uterine cancer with the general population, we generally mean the most common type, which is endometrial cancer. Interestingly, ovarian cancer is similarly confusing.  The deeper you dig, the more you uncover!"

If you have other questions for Dr. Lyerly, or any of our other experts,
please email the questions to Mary or Nora.

Unit Error Update: Thank you to Mary Ircink and Adrienne Laravuso for pointing out an error in the Gynecological Cancers unit: on Slide 12 of the PowerPoint, the second statistic should say: "12,000 women are affected annually by cervical cancer, most UNDER 55 years of age." If you need help changing your PowerPoint file, watch this tutorial on how to make the edit.
