September Observances

Click on the observances to go to a website with more information.

  • Healthy Aging Month - It's time to focus national attention on the positive parts of growing older. Get started on better health practices now.
  • National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month - One in three children in the United States is overweight or obese. Childhood obesity puts kids at risk for health problems that were once seen only in adults, like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. To learn more, see the toolkit created by the US Department of Health and Human Services.
  • National Recovery Month - This year's theme is "Join the Voices for Recovery: Visible, Vocal, Valuable."  This toolkit can help increase awareness and understanding of mental and substance use issues.
  • Newborn Screening Awareness Month - All babies should receive a newborn screening, even if they look healthy, because some medical conditions cannot be seen by just looking at the baby. Finding these conditions soon after birth can help prevent some serious problems, such as brain or organ damage, and even death.
  • Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month - Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from all gynecologic cancers.  Learn about the symptoms, stages and whether you are at risk. What a perfect month to do a GrapeVine Session on Gynecological Cancer!
  • Prostate Cancer Awareness Month - Prostate cancer develops in the prostate, a walnut-sized gland in the male reproductive system. It is one of the most common types of cancer in men. Typically slow growing, it often causes no symptoms until it is in an advanced stage. However, some types are aggressive and can spread quickly.
  • Whole Grains Month - This year's theme is "Share the Goodness of Whole Grain. The Whole Grains Council website is a great place to learn about whole grains - what they are, their health benefits, how much you need and recipes you can use to  "share the goodness".
Thank you for all you do for the GrapeVine Project.

Sincerely,
