"Spirit of Bermuda"

First Entrant in NEW CLASSIC SAIL Division

for June 2013

Spirit of Bermuda
The Bermuda Sloop Foundation has officially entered their Spirit of Bermuda training vessel in the 2013 Marion Bermuda Race.
The Race Committee has created a a new "Classic Sail" division, which is open to vessels of any size which have, or may obtain, an ASTA (American Sail Training Association) B, C or D handicap. It is anticipated that these boats will have amateur crews with professional licensed officers. Entrants in this division are anticipated to be documented Coast Guard inspected vessels and as such will not be subject to normal pre race inspection process. They will, however, be subject to the compliance committee's post-race inspections.
The Spirit of Bermuda is managed by the Bermuda Sloop Foundation - whose vision is to provide superior youth development to large numbers of Bermudian youth using a ship as a unique, dynamic '24/7' operating community and classroom.
For information on obtaining your own berth aboard this magnificent ship for the 2013 Marion Bermuda Race, or if you would like to donate to the foundation, please contact Denise Riviere at BSF (441)737-5667  www.bermudasloop.org

This newsletter brings you BIG news about significant changes that have been adopted for the 2013 Marion Bermuda Race!
  • Vessel Size Limits increased from 80ft to 100ft LOA
  • New Division with unrestricted sail inventory
  • Symmetrical Spinnakers and Spinnaker Poles permitted
  • Traditional Sail Training/Classic Yacht Division added

These changes reflect the Race organization's ongoing commitment to evolve with the sport of offshore sailboat racing and recognition of a desire by some potential entrants to participate in a way that was previously prohibited.

The changes broaden eligibility for participation, while maintaining the Corinthian spirit of the Race - focused on family and fun, with captains and crew participating for the joy and pleasure of sailing, competition and the camaraderie that accompanies this Race.

MORE DETAILS HERE ABOUT EXCITING CHANGES

We invite ocean racing newcomers as well as seasoned racing veterans to bring your friends and family, and enter Marion Bermuda 2013.  See you on the starting line - June 14, 2013!

Sincerely,
Liz Stott
