A Year of Change, Growth, and Accomplishment
Dear Students, Parents, Faculty, and Staff,
This school year in District 90 has been characterized by a number of significant events and accomplishments. Our teachers have been preparing for our transition to the Common Core curriculum standards. At the same time, D90 embarked on a yearlong investigation of Advanced Differentiated Learning. We also completed important school renovations, accomplished a number of strategic planning objectives, and received national and state recognition for excellence in student achievement, operations, and financial reporting. Most importantly, our students have been challenged to learn, grow, and become their best selves on a daily basis. We are very proud of their accomplishments.
None of these achievements would have been possible without our talented and dedicated staff. Without these outstanding individuals, our students' school experience would be very different. Our faculty and staff are hard-working professionals who love their work, appreciate the unique qualities of each child, and take pride in their students' accomplishments. As a team, they strive to provide a high quality educational experience in our schools each day, and it shows in the results that our students individually and collectively achieve. Our faculty and staff provide a safe and caring environment in which students can comfortably learn. They are the backbone of District 90 in every way.
For all that they do, and the care with which they do it, the Board of Education has declared May 6-10, 2013, Staff Appreciation Week. Please join us as we acknowledge their vital contributions toward making our schools a wonderful place for the children to learn and grow.
Respectfully,
Edward Condon, Ph.D.
Superintendent

Advanced Differentiated Learning Parent Information Night
The Superintendent's Leadership Council (SLC) provided its written report on Advanced Differentiated Learning (ADL) to the Board of Education in April. The SLC will be presenting its findings and suggestions for implementation at the May 6 Committee of the Whole Meeting.
We hope you can join us for a Parent Information Night on this topic at 7 p.m. on May 15 in the Roosevelt auditorium. Families are invited to hear the committee's findings and learn more about suggested changes to ADL programming in District 90. |

D90 Transitioning to Common Core Standards in Language Arts
District 90 teachers have begun the transition to Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in English Language Arts. As part of this process, they have been involved in the complex task of gathering new resources to use with students. This work has allowed our staff to be fully immersed in the meaning and purpose of the CCSS. We believe that this important step will allow our teachers to select the highest quality resources in terms of complexity, student interests, and engagement.
In order to deliver greater consistency of instruction across the District, we will be adopting core literacy resources and materials. Using the Common Core literacy resources will help us better align our shared expectations across grade levels, and from one grade level to the next. These resources are planned for adoption by fall 2013.
Through the text adoption process, our teacher/administrator committee will be examining and selecting the highest quality resources. Parents will also be provided with an opportunity to examine the core resources before materials are recommended for Board approval. We will provide more information as this process unfolds.
If you have questions about this transition, please contact Martha Ryan-Toye, Director of Student Services, at the District office.

Online Registration for the 2013-14 School Year Available May 15
On May 15, our new online student registration system will open for Early Bird registration for the fall. Information about how to access the new system will be emailed to parents once the system is live.
This system should be more efficient and provide better accuracy of the information received. It will also enhance our "green" practices. We anticipate a smooth transition to this new system, but will appreciate your understanding as we implement this new process.
Once this process is in place, paper registration forms will no longer be used. All registrations will be completed online. We are looking forward to improving current student registration through the online process, and remain ready to answer questions you may have as you complete registration.
New Requirement for Returning Students
Beginning with the 2013-14 school year, at least one proof of residency document will be required each year to ensure that all students reside within the boundaries of the school district. Families will be asked to submit a current lease or a copy of their last real estate tax bill.
Watch your mail and email for further information about the registration process after May 15. |
