As long as sentient existence has been around, it has sought truth. Yet truth is not absolute. It is relative to where you are standing. Given enough time, even empirical sciences have proven this to be true. For example, the laws of our physical reality are null and void at a quantum level. Additionally, the rate of decay of carbon 14 (carbon dating) has recently dramatically changed and there is no explanation for it.

From a consciousness and spiritual standpoint, this is more pronounced. The spiritual belief or God concept that we hold is the highest to which we will allow our consciousness to evolve, but it is not the greatest truth that exists in our Universe. If we are holding a preconceived notion or a God concept that is inherited, we are limiting our expansion.

If a higher truth or God concept arrives too soon, it will shatter our psyche. Therefore, our knowledge and understanding of truth must always match our current God concept. More destruction, battles, and wars have occurred because of an expanding God concept perceived as a threat by others. Mind what you say, for your God concept may be perceived as a threat by others.
