Welcome to the Talking Alternative 2013 Newsletter!
Here's a thought for today about following our instincts: On this day, May 16, in 1801, William H. Seward was born. He was the United States Secretary of State, whose most famous achievement was the purchase of Alaska (586,412 square miles of territory - more than twice the area of Texas) from Russia at 2¢/acre for a total of $7.2 million, the equivalent of $118 million in today's dollars. The purchase was mocked by the public as "Seward's Folly" or "Seward's Icebox." Of course, opposition to the purchase of Alaska subsided with the Klondike Gold Strike in 1896. When asked what he considered to be his greatest achievement as Secretary of State, Seward replied "The purchase of Alaska, but it will take the people a generation to find it out." Alaska celebrates the purchase on Seward's Day, the last Monday of March. Now who was it who said, "A man who wants to lead the orchestra must turn his back on the crowd"?
