Dear Palos East Families,
With the beginning of the 4th quarter, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for the amazing year you and your children have given us at Palos East. The staff is busy making sure your little ones are cared for in every way possible and look forward to many more productive weeks as we end our year.
District 118 is piloting a new assessment program for students in grades K-8. The NWEA MAP is a nationally-normed skills assessment that will replace Scantron Performance Series and district created assessments. The MAP assessment is web-based and can be administered up to three times per school year to measure progress in meeting grade level objectives. This assessment program will provide more timely information for planning instruction than the skills test we have used in the past.
We administered the MAP assessment in reading and math to students in Grades K-2 in January, and students in Grades K-7 will take it the week of April 1st. We will continue to administer the Cognitive Ability Test from the Iowa test publishers to students at grades 1 and 5.
Benefits we hope to realize from the NWEA MAP assessment include:
- Web-based administration with instant scoring for more timely results
- Many options in standard reports and almost unlimited custom reports and data analysis tools available to teachers and administrators; reports are based on the new Common Core State Standards
- Detailed reports for parents that include National Percentile Ranking, with longitudinal reporting options available as testing continues over time
- Adaptive tests provide items to match student proficiency - both above and below grade level
