Energy Saving Tips From EnergySmart

1) Turn off your cooling system and open your windows while sleeping. When you wake in the morning, shut the windows and blinds to capture the cool air.

2) Turn off ceiling fans when you leave the room. Remember that fans cool people, not rooms, by creating a wind chill effect.

Want more tips to help you save money and be comfortable? Call EnergySmart at 303-544-1000 to speak with an Energy Advisor at no charge.

The 2016 Street Rehabilitation Project continues in early August with top lift paving on the entirety of Rock Creek Circle. Striping, utility work, and cleanup will occur intermittently.

To be kept up to date regarding reconstruction schedules and information, please contact Alex Bullen at alexb@superiorcolorado.gov or 303-499-3675, ext 110The Town appreciates your patience while performing this project to continue its goal of investing in and maintaining the public infrastructure.

Additional ROAD WORK UPDATES

McCaslin/Main Street Roundabout:  The Town Board recently approved the design of a multi-lane roundabout at a new intersection to be built for Main Street serving the Superior Town Center. This intersection will be located about 900 feet north of Discovery Parkway and 1,000 feet south of Coal Creek Drive. Construction is expected to start in late summer. Two lanes of traffic in each direction will be maintained during morning and evening peak periods.

Town-wide concrete repair:   Curb, gutter and sidewalk repair will be ongoing throughout Town during late summer and early fall.

McCaslin BRT Station to Coal Creek Trail:  A multi-use trail connection will be constructed this fall connecting the new McCaslin underpass at the DDI with Coal Creek and the US 36 bikeway. The trail will run along the north side of Superior Plaza (Brakes Plus, Superior Liquor and Old Chicago).

COYOTE UPDATE

Colorado Parks and Wildlife department would like to inform Boulder County residents on continued coyote activity in the area. Dog walkers are encouraged to be aware of their surroundings. Larger dogs (25 lbs and up) may attract more attention than normal as coyotes watch out for potential competition, be sure to keep dogs on leash and attended when outside and never let them off leash in open spaces, the coyotes natural habitat. Smaller dogs and cats can also draw attention if out unattended especially when food is more scarce. Scat studies show that our local coyotes are eating what they should, lots of small rodents and vegetation, but they are adaptable and opportunistic so keeping pets close ensures they stay safe.

You can contact the Town or email wildlife ecologist Ashley DeLaup at ashdelaup@gmail.com if you have questions or concerns. You can also report aggressive coyote behavior to the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Regional Office at 303-291-7227.

Slow The Flow and New Rebates Added

An inefficient sprinkler not only wastes water, but also wastes your money! Get your system's efficiency checked with a FREE irrigation inspection by the Center for ReSource Conservation and the Town of Superior.

Inspections last about 90 minutes, but could help you save thousands of gallons of water each year. It's easy to sign up and get long-lasting and money-saving results! Simply call 303-999-3824 or sign-up at conservationcenter.org/sprinkler to schedule.

HISTORICAL COMMISSION CORNER

We hope many of you saw Superior's newly painted 1942 fire truck in the Fourth of July Parade. It was also on display in the parking lot during the pancake breakfast. We are quite proud of the work done on the old truck by the Mile High Classics craftsmen at their shop in Denver. Thanks go out to the Board of Trustees, Town Manager and Town staff on their support for getting the truck restored. Staff members Bryan Meyer and Patrick Hammer really carried the ball on this project. Look for it at future Town events.

The Superior Historical Museum will be open twice in August as part of our extended summer openings. It will be open August 6th and 20th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Museum volunteers have changed some of the displays and added new ones. Please drop in and see what we have to show you about Superior's fascinating past. It is located in Asti Park at 2nd and Maple Streets in Original Superior. Look for our new large brown sign on the Maple Street/Marshall Road side of the building designating it as the Historical Museum.

If you have any questions regarding the Historical Commission or Historical Museum, feel free to call Bryan Meyer (Town of Superior Staff) at 303-499-3750 or Larry Dorsey (Historical Commission Chair) at 303-499-1969 or visit the Town of Superior website.

AT THE FIREHOUSE

August marks the end of summer for school age children and brings prime camping weather with its warm nights. Boulder County's fire season has been active since March, starting with the fire on the south side of Rock Creek and additional fire activity in July as was experienced at the Cold Springs Fire in Nederland. For updated burn ban information in Boulder County visit http://www.bouldercounty.org/safety/fire/pages/firebans.aspx.

The grasses in the greenbelts throughout Superior have dried out and are very susceptible to fire. If you are grilling please be sure all charcoal ashes are fully extinguished and not free to blow around in the wind. Please do not dispose of lit smoking materials into anything other than an ashtray or container that can't catch on fire. If you are using a self-contained outdoor fireplace or chiminea on private property be sure it is fully extinguished before bed and do not burn if it is windy out.

If camping is on your agenda check out the burn regulations for your destination before you go. Smores are just as good when made on a small camping stove as they are over a campfire. Fore regional fire information visit http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/recreation/conditions/.

School will be back in session on August 18th, keep an eye out and slow down. Watch for bikes, scooters and children crossing the street at crosswalks. Take the time now to remind your children to use helmets when riding bikes and scooters, keep their head out of their phone and iPod while walking on sidewalks and use the crosswalk to cross streets. Thanks for helping keep our community safe.
