NOTE FROM THE MAYOR

Dear Residents,

The Town of Superior will be hosting the Superior Morgul Bike Race for a fourth straight year on May 17 - May 19. The Town partnered with Boulder Racing and the event will feature three day of competitive cycling, a community festival, vendor booths, a family cruiser lap and kid's race on the Summit Criterium course on Saturday and the Morgul Citizen's Ride on Sunday.

This year's event weekend will kick-off with the Friday night Time Trial along McCaslin Boulevard, followed by the Summit Criterium on Saturday and Morgul-Bismark Road Race on Sunday. In addition to the weekend's great racing, local cycling vendors and businesses will be on hand to show off new products, gear, safety equipment, and fun cycling tips. Community activities and vendors booths will be set up along Coalton Road, near Community Park on Saturday, and near the finish line just below Highway 128 on Sunday. Similar to previous years of the race there will also be food and beer gardens.

If you are interested in participating in the Morgul Citizen's Ride, the ride will consist of one full lap on the closed 13.3 mile Morgul-Bismark course. Riders will take off from Community Park, ride the course, and finish on the "Wall" just like the top amateur and pro racers. Participants also receive a technical tee-shirt. For those not wanting to take on the "Wall" there will be a family cruiser lap and kid's race during the Summit Criterium on Saturday - please be safe and remember to wear your bike helmets.

I hope you, your family and friends can participate in the 2013 Superior Morgul!

Go to www.SuperiorMorgul.com for more information or to register for the Morgul Citizen's Ride.

Sincerely,

Andrew Muckle

DROUGHT and WATERING UPDATE

Currently, the Town does not have any mandatory Watering Restrictions in place.  We are aware of our sister communities mandates, but we believe the Town won't have to take such measures.  However, the Town is encouraging that each of us be responsible for making an effort to implement the voluntary watering guidelines as posted on our website.

We have been quite fortunate that since the previous Town Newsletter, we have received many good storms that have increased the snow pack in the high country, specifically in the Colorado River Basin where the majority of the Town's water supply originates. The U.S. Drought monitoring system has upgraded the drought forecast for our area from severe to moderate as shown in the updated map below.

If you have any questions you can contact Alex Ariniello or Jim Widner at the Town of Superior Public Works and Utilities Department.

The Town Board awarded a contract for the 2013 Street Maintenance and Rehabilitation Project to Aggregate Industries on April 22nd.  Work is scheduled to begin the week of May 27th. Similar to last year's project, this year's project will include reconstruction on several streets in the Arbours, Hillside, and Circle Park neighborhoods.  In addition, the Purple Park parking lot will be resurfaced and a second raised pedestrian crossing will be constructed on Eldorado Drive.  The project will be constructed this summer, and major work elements should be substantially complete by the end of September.  The soon to be improved streets are:

 Arbours Neighborhood

  1. Gill Way
  2. Heartstrong Street
  3. Elbert Court
  4. Pitkin Avenue (south of Rock Creek Parkway)

 Hillside Neighborhood

  1. Masters Court
  2. Edison Place
  3. Eldorado Circle
  4. Campo Way
  5. Vernon Lane

 Circle Park Neighborhood

  1. Eldorado Drive (Coal Ridge Drive to Indiana Street)

Residents will have to remove their vehicles from the street for at least several days during the reconstruction.  The Town will be holding a neighborhood meeting with residents on Tuesday, May 21st from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Rocky Mountain Fire Station #5 (Community Room), 2701 South Indiana Street, to discuss the construction schedule and procedures for vehicle access.   Please contact David Heinrich, Civil Engineer, at 303-499-3675 or davidh@superiorcolorado.gov, if you have any questions or if you would like to host a neighborhood meeting.  The Town will be in contact with the affected residents at a later time.

DISPOSING OF ELECTRONIC WASTE

Take advantage of Hard to Recycle Collection Day
Sunday, May 5th in Superior - HERE'S WHY:

Beginning July 1, 2013 it will be a violation of the solid waste regulations for residents of Colorado to dispose of electronic waste in their trash. While it has been for many years and continues to be violation of the hazardous waste regulations for industry, businesses, and government agencies to dispose of any electronic waste that exhibits one or more characteristics of hazardous waste in municipal solid waste landfills, Senate Bill 12-133 bans landfill disposal of certain electronic wastes from households.

The Town has partnered with Eco-Cycle and will pay 50% of the cost to recycle electronic (if applicable).  We encourage you to take advantage of the annual opportunity to recycle unwanted electronics properly.

Electronics that are banned from disposal include:

computers & computer monitors

televisions

printers

fax machines

DVD & VCR players

Peripherals such as keyboards & mice

radios & stereos

video game consoles

laptops, notebooks

Ultrabooks, netbooks & tablets

Also, FYI re:  Data Security

You are solely responsible for protecting personal information stored on the hard drive of computers or printers prior to recycling. Simply deleting files and reformatting the hard drive does not guarantee that all of your data will be destroyed. A better approach is to use special disk whipping software designed to protect sensitive data. Another option is to find a reputable vendor to remove your hard drive or do it yourself. You may destroy the hard drive by hammering a nail through it in several places or by deeply scratching the surface. Once you've secured your information, bring the drive to a professional recycler for disposal.

Leave your keys at home, hop on your bike and join thousands of Coloradan's as they bike to work on Wednesday, June 26. The Town of Superior is partnering with Whole Foods to host a breakfast station on the patio at the Superior Whole Foods location - located at 303 Marshall Road. The breakfast station will be open from 6:30 am - 9:00 am. Stop on your ride to work for some yummy free food, drawings, a bike tune up and fun giveaways. For more information please call 303-499-3675 or EMAIL US HERE. Hope to see you there - ride safe!

CODE ENFORCEMENT CORNER

Each month, the Town includes information about issues and trends in the area of code enforcement. During the month of April, 44 code violations were identified, primarily right-of-way obstructions such as RV's, trailers and dumpsters. Fourty-two of these were promptly corrected, resulting in a 95% compliance rate.

This month, we want to highlight a portion of the Municipal Code that may impact residents who are starting to work on landscaping or construction projects in & around their homes:

Ch.11-3-50 Illicit Discharges

It is unlawful to discharge or cause to be discharged into the municipal storm sewer system any landscaping or construction materials.

Please have your stockpiles of materials delivered in your driveway or other suitable staging areas on your property.  Runoff from gravel, dirt, compost or other loose material that have been deposited in the curb & gutter is a primary cause of stormwater pollution.  Remember, everything that goes into stormdrains goes directly into creeks, ponds, & downstream waters untreated.

Questions regarding the Town's code enforcement program can be directed to our Code Enforcement Officer, Reggie Nettles, at

303-499-3675 ext. 165.

AT THE FIREHOUSE

RMF ambulance

If you're like most people, thinking about what to do in case of a disaster is not at the top of your list of fun family activities. But, as the French scientist Louis Pasteur once wrote, "Chance favors the prepared mind." In fact, stories of survival, and even comfort, during trying times are filled with anecdotes of how even just a small amount of forethought and preparation was the key to a positive outcome.

So, what constitutes a disaster? It can be anything from being temporarily displaced from your home, to not having heat, water or electricity for an extended period of time.  The good news is that with some basic preparation, the impact to you and you family can be reduced. The American Red Cross website, has several valuable suggestions. Boulder County also has a dedicated page on their website with pertinent information about preparedness action steps.

Have you ever wondered how people receive emergency notification phone calls to their home and cell phones?  Boulder County utilizes the Everbridge system to facilitate these calls for disasters in your area.  You can sign up using the Boulder County link above and clicking the Emergency Notification System link.  This link contains pertinent information about how and when you will be notified of events occurring in your area.

Take the time now to think about you and your family's plan of action in case of personal, local or national disaster and share that plan with your family members. To quote Ben Franklin, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
