Some of Our Many Adoptable Birds
Since 2003, Phoenix Landing has re-homed almost 2,600 birds. In addition, we make a commitment to every bird that enters our program - that we will always find a place for them, no matter how many homes they may need in the future.  For our long-lived birds, this can be quite a few.  Let's face it, we'd like to offer a "forever home" but that's just rarely possible. This makes adoption mission essential for our birds, and we must consider how to ensure their future protection.  Going from a good home to a bad one is just not an acceptable option.

Luckily, parrots are one of the most adaptable and resilient animals on our planet!  Having a new family and home can be fun and exciting -- but it's important that there BE a new home, and that it is also a compassionate and knowledgeable one.

People's lives can change suddenly due to family, health or finances; so we've had to find more than one home for many of our 2,600 birds.  Here are three great birds that have recently needed our help again, and they are looking for their extraordinary new families!
RAINBOW, Congo African Grey
Rainbow is 34 and she is quite the character! She has an extensive vocabulary and is very easy going, assuming of course that you are respectful of her space and interests too. She is a terrific eater, and reportedly loves to sing Andy Griffith and The Dock of the Bay. At one point in her life she could fly pretty well, so it would be great for her to have this opportunity again!  Flying can be a cardiac life saver for parrots built for extensive activity and exercise.
ZAZU, Umbrella Cockatoo
12 year old Zazu is one of the most well-mannered cockatoos we've encountered, and being a girl makes her a bit easier to predict. She's learned terrific independence skills, which means she will happily hang out without demanding your constant attention - a truly important skill for cockatoos in captivity.  Zazu is a good eater, of both Harrison's pellets and a wide variety of whole foods.  She's also spent a bit of time in an aviary now, and really enjoys this opportunity for extra activity.
PEPPER, Timneh African Grey
14 year old Pepper is very social and enjoys family activity (except perhaps fast moving small children).  He has enjoyed the pleasure of flight in his first 2 homes, and it's certainly a benefit we would like to see him keep - for both his mental and long-term physical health.   Pepper also enjoys a bit of time outdoors in a safe cage, soaking up that vitamin D3 that helps him absorb that important calcium.  He also enjoys the outdoor view!  A little almond butter is his favorite training treat.
Thanks to Companion Animal Health and Dr. Robert Ness!
Laser Donation for the Parrots of Phoenix Landing
We are profoundly grateful to Companion Animal Health for their recent donation of a Companion Therapy Laser, and to Dr. Ness for facilitating this incredible new resource for the parrots of Phoenix Landing.  We all hope that our birds will not get hurt or become ill, but when they do, sometimes some laser therapy can be especially helpful for healing. Our job now is not only to help birds that might benefit, but also contribute to research and knowledge about laser benefits for parrots.   To read more about this donation, go to Michelle Underhill's recent blog post here.

Step-Up Workshop:
S
kills To Empower People to Understand Parrots
August 12-14; November 11-13 (advanced)
Are you interested in hands-on training and more intense parrot care discussions?  Our popular Step-Up workshops in Asheville, NC are designed to give you an abundance of information about behavior, health, nutrition and enrichment. In addition to extensive training sessions with the birds, we'll also cook, talk about how to keep your birds busy, and spend time with a veterinarian.  The November advanced class is almost solely about behavior and training.
