PLEASE CONSIDER ADOPTION FIRST!
The Phoenix Landing Foundation is a 501(c)(3) all-volunteer organization. It was established to promote and protect the welfare of parrots through adoption, education, and conservation. Almost every bird, from the smallest to the largest, from the most loved to the most neglected, will need a new home someday. Probably a succession of homes. People's lives change, often unexpectedly.  One day your bird may need a good new home too.

ADOPTABLE BIRDS

Here are just a few of our many birds looking for their new homes

NIKKI is a 34 year-old female Timneh African grey who was with the same family most of her life. Nikki is also a wild caught parrot, so she deserves extra special consideration in her next home.  She is not keen on being touched, but there are so many ways to have fun with a parrot without picking them up.   Don't forget to challenge her intelligence with some complicated things to keep her busy and engaged!
SUNNY and GREENIE
Meet an adorable odd couple!  Sunny is a sun conure. He has one slightly crippled claw. Greenie is a typical high energy, mischievous dusky conure.  Both are about 9 years old. These two birds have a tight bond and need to be adopted as a pair.  They constantly preen and play together, and will call for one another when separated, but they are also interested in meeting people. Sunny appreciates a variety of comfortable perches, especially soft rope ones, and sometimes a small break from Greenie, his busy partner.
MAX is an 11 year old Maximillian pionus.  When he first came to us, his feathers were not in very good condition. His wonderful foster family has made sure that he has good food and busy things to do. His favorite place is on the swing in the kitchen, where he whistles, talks, and sometimes even loudly joins in the activities.
LOLA is a young 2 year old female quaker. Her preferred means of transport in on a towel. This makes her feel safe from those potentially scary fingers. She has recently been spending time with her new birdie friends in an aviary. She's also watching others and learning how to eat some healthy foods. Eating well can be fun!
With hundreds of birds in foster, or waiting for our help, we will work with you and your family to make the best match for everyone.  For more information about our foster and adoption program, or to find our application, go to phoenixlanding.org/adoption
FRANK RUTOWSKI, D.V.M., Special Guest!
October 4th, Springfield, VA
October 5th, Edgewater, MD
Join us for 2 special events with Dr. Rutowski in October. On Saturday in Springfield, Virginia he will talk about a few simple things you can train your bird to do in preparation for the veterinary exam.  On Sunday, near Annapolis, Maryland, he will talk about the nature of wild parrots, because the parrot in your home is very closely related in behavior and intelligence. Understanding wild parrots helps us to understand our own parrots better!  For more information go to: phoenixlanding.org/events

UPDATE ON JOSE
The 50 Year Old Macaw
Last month we introduced you to one of the newest parrots of Phoenix Landing - Jose.  He was well loved by the same family for 50 years, but had never been to a vet. Since he has the most unusual eyes we have ever seen and very limited vision, he certainly deserved some specialty care. So Dr. Frank Rutowski of the Animal Care Hospital of Matthews (NC), Jose's new vet, made arrangements with ophthalmologist Dr. Kristin Fischer at the VCA Animal Specialty Center of SC.
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any diagnosable problem which would allow Jose to have improved vision. Apparently the off-center pupil is pulling the iris tighter and thinner on the 'back' side, allowing a brown pigment from behind the iris to show through.  The good news - he does not have cataracts, glaucoma, lymphoma, asper, uveitis or keratitis in his eyes. Perhaps he had an infection many years ago that went unattended.  Please make sure your bird has his own avian vet to look out for his long-term health and wellness!  We want to give a special thanks to Jose's vet team, San who is fostering Jose with great care and affection, and Jose's special supporters - the Parrot Posse and Debra Meister.
