News. Training. Insight.

WELCOME BACK!

Lots to talk about this week; especially the return of my very favorite CONTEST!!

But, first, the most consistently popular article on my website for the last nine months is "Caution! SSD Drives and Yosemite."  This detailed problems between 3rd-party SSD drives and OS X Yosemite. At the end of June, Apple released the 10.10.4 update to OS X, which fixes this problem. Read the updated article here.

This is SO cool!  I am delighted to announce the return of our "Creative Truths Contest!" The last time we ran this was 2013 and it generated thousands of responses. Creative Truths are thoughts and aphorisms that describe the creative process and ring true in your life. Entry is FREE - and fun. Enter as many times as you want. Each week we'll pick at least one winner and publish their Truths in this newsletter. These entries are such fun - learn more and enter your Truths here.

I am experimenting with two different types of training in the next few weeks, one in-person, the other online: 1. A new version of my in-person Master Class, focused on helping you improve your projects.  Learn more here.  2. An online class, called "Larry's Summer School," that updates and builds on our highly popular "Craft of Editing" bundle last winter. Learn more here. Both have limited seats and both are brand-new. Sign up soon before all the seats are gone.

Last week's webinar on 3D Space in Motion was a big hit. So much so that we are returning to this same subject again this week to look at some advanced 3D techniques in Motion 5.  Space is limited - sign up here.  Also, as a note, if you purchased our Master Motion Bundle recently, we'll email a special upgrade offer for both these two webinars after this week's session is complete.

I have six new articles this week: two product reviews, two videos and two articles; including the results of a fascinating survey of storage in the creative media industry. All the details are below, along with an update to our Top 3 lists.

Enjoy your summer and I'll chat with you next week.

LARRY'S SUMMER SCHOOL
The idea behind this brand-new class was the success we had with "The Craft of Editing."

Starting next week, we are offering an eight-session, seven-week class focused on how to tell stories with moving pictures.

This is more than technology, here you will learn how to use technology to captivate an audience. Along the way, we'll learn how to use technology to enhance our stories.

This class also builds on what I teach at USC and includes an Award of Completion at the end of the course. I'll also provide sample media you can use during the course. We release a new class every week.

Pre-register today and save money. Here's the link to learn more.

Digital Production Buzz
THE BUZZ CONTINUES TO GROW

If you haven't visited the Digital Production Buzz recently, you're missing a lot!  We've added a new product demo segment called "Tech Talk," plus Randi Altman's "Perspective on the News."

And our guest list has never been stronger. We started with Scott Hosfeld. He's a composer, conductor and performer with an emphasis on film. We play some of his work, then talk with him on how he approaches scoring a film.  Then, Jonny Videl, and his team, have invented "Callsheet Operator." This is an online replacement for the printed Call Sheet. Listen and see if it makes sense for you. Finally, Steve Leon creates media events to connect the press with new products and ideas. Listen as he explains what you need to know to maximize your press coverage.

New Articles & Videos
I have six new articles and videos for you this week!

Starting with something to get you thinking: the results of the 2015 Storage in Media Survey. This survey studies how we are using media, what media we are using and what the trends are for the future.  Then, I have two product reviews; both of plug-ins. One works for Final Cut and Premiere, the other is just Final Cut only. Next are two movies which are excerpts from our 3D Space in Motion webinar and I wrap up with a detailed answer to where files that are shared directly to YouTube or Vimeo are handled and stored by Final Cut Pro X.  Lots of good stuff here!

I also updated our Top 3 Lists. See you next week!

Article01

Storage in Media 2015
Survey Results
ARTICLE

Every year since 2009, Coughlin & Associates has surveyed the media industry to learn how we are using storage. As you can imagine, the changes over the last six years are dramatic.

Tom has allowed me to share the results of this year's survey and there are conclusions here that I find surprising.

Motion 5: Create a 3D Set
for Final Cut Pro X
VIDEO

This excerpt from my recent "3D Space in Motion 5" webinar illustrates how to create a 3D set in Motion that contains drop zones and editable text, both of which you can modify in Final Cut, then send the whole package from Motion to FCP X.

There are some really interesting ideas here.

Watch the video here.

Article02
Product Review:
Luca Visual FX: "Spectrum"
ARTICLE

This is an illustrated review of a new plug-in for Final Cut Pro X, Premiere Pro CC, After Effects CC and Motion 5 from Luca Visual FX called "Spectrum."

This creates stunning backgrounds in no time.

Product Review:
SUGARfx: Swoosh
ARTICLE

This is an illustrated review of a new plug-in for Final Cut Pro X from SUGARfx called "Swoosh."

And that's exactly what this creates: swooshes for text, swooshes for transitions, swooshes for mortises, and swooshes just for the sake of swooshing.  Cool, cool stuff.

Read the article here.

Articles03
Final Cut Pro X: Finding Files Shared to YouTube or Vimeo
ARTICLE

This article grew out of a reader's question: where are files stored that are shared directly out of Final Cut Pro X for either YouTube or Vimeo?

This is a surprisingly tricky question - and all the answers are here in this article.

Motion 5: Create a Depth-of-Field Look for a 3D Camera
VIDEO

This excerpt from my recent "3D Space in Motion 5" webinar showcases how to create a depth-of-field effect for a camera. (Depth-of-Field means that portions of the image are in-focus while other portions are out of focus.)

In this video, I show you how to create this effect, then how to animate it.

Watch the video here.
