WELCOME BACK!

Larry Jordan
By the time you read this, I'll be somewhere over the Atlantic, heading for London. (More on that in a minute.) In the meantime, I've got lots of interesting stuff to talk about this week - including six new articles and videos, plus a corrected link to an article from last week.

First, though, a quick note - due to my teaching and travel schedule in the UK, next week's newsletter will be out on Tuesday, not Monday. I didn't want you to worry when it doesn't show up next Monday.

There have been many nice comments on my article last week introducing everyone that works here. Thanks - I am very proud to be working with them, too.

Our studio continues to improve as we wrap up the installation and move into making everything look good. The challenges of smooth web streaming continue and, this week, I have another article covering what we've learned, what works and where we are having problems. I decided to write this as a continuing series, so that you can follow along as we all learn together.

A good example of what we can do in our studio is this week's webinar; an in-studio production showing how to work with audio in Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014. You'll see examples of what we are doing and how it looks in the articles section below.

This will be the seventh year The Buzz is covering NAB -- I'll have more details on our plans as the show gets closer.

XDCAM AND XAVC UPDATE

Generic newsletter bullet
Well, well, well. Um, yeah. The discussion on XAVC and related Sony video formats that started two issues ago continues. Next time, I'll put all this into an article to allow reader comments.

It seems that Sony provides two software packages to simplify working with a variety of Sony video formats:
Catalyst Browse and Catalyst Prepare. Browse is free, and
Prepare is $199.95. Both of them allow viewing and transcoding of a variety of media.

SHORT NOTES

My video last week on Photoshop's Spot Healing Brush had a bad link. You can find the correct link in the Articles section below.

 LAST WEEK'S WEBINAR
AUDIO IN PREMIERE PRO CC 2014

Generic newsletter bullet
Last week, we were back in the big studio to present working with audio in Adobe Premiere Pro CC and Audition CC. I always enjoy talking about audio because good sound is vital to any project.

In this webinar, I covered material I haven't talked about before, including configuring and recording voice overs, working with multichannel sound, and some very cool tricks we can do with keyframes.

This video is free to all members of our Video Training Library. Everyone else, click here to download a copy.

WEBINARS ON HOLD -- TILL MARCH

Generic newsletter bullet
With my travel schedule, we are putting our weekly webinars on hold till the middle of March.

I'll be back then with a new schedule of cool stuff to talk about and show.

FEATURED INTERVIEW
DIGITAL PRODUCTION BUZZ

Buzz newsletter bullet
The Buzz now has its own YouTube Channel!  You can find it here.

As part of the Channel, Mike and I put together a short intro welcoming you to the channel - which turned out to be quite funny. Watch it here.

This last week's show had some great guests:
Paul Babb, Sean Mullen and Bob Caniglia. This week, I want to highlight Paul's interview.

Paul Babb is the CEO of Maxon/US. Maxon makes Cinema 4D, one of the leading software for creating 3D and virtual reality images. This week he talks about the increased opportunity for jobs in motion graphics this year, along with his plans for showcasing the work of artists at NAB.

His jobs section, alone, is worth watching.

Watch Paul's interview here.

I invite you to join us for the live show each Thursday where you can watch, listen and share in the Live Chat. Here's the link.

Thanks to the folks at Take1 Transcriptions, you can also read each show. Written transcripts are now posted to each show page. Read the transcript here.

NEW ARTICLES AND VIDEOS

Generic newsletter bullet
I have three new articles, three new videos and a corrected link to an article from last week.

Since my webinar was about Premiere last week, we are Premiere-centric this week with three videos showcasing audio in Premiere. Also, I have a very interesting article on working with large images in Premiere with a new feature that I didn't know about until I wrote this article.

One of the projects created by my USC students triggered the idea behind this week's article.

Finally, we are continuing to discover and work through issues related to video streaming on the web. In this second of our continuing series of article, Megan Paulos writes about what we are learning about using Wirecast for streaming.

I'm looking forward to seeing new and familiar faces during my London trip. These presentations are always fun. And remember, next week's newsletter will be out on Tuesday.

Oh! I updated our Top 3 Lists, as well. Have a great week.

ARTICLE: ADOBE PREMIERE PRO CC 2014
Display Large Images

Premiere has added two new commands to make handling large images in the Timeline faster and easier.

However, one of these will cause your images to look worse.

This article explains what these are, how they work and which one you need to use on your projects.

ARTICLE: TELESTREAM WIRECAST
Streaming Video to the Web - Part 2

Well, our journey to figure out how to stream live video to the web continues.

In this second part of our continuing series on getting web video to work, Megan Paulos discusses how we are getting signals into Telestream Wirecast and the settings we are using. Then she talks about what's working and what isn't.

If you want to provide live video streaming to the web without spending a ton of money, this on-going series can help you avoid problems.

VIDEO: PREMIERE PRO CC 2014
Record Voice-Overs to the Timeline

This video is an excerpt from a recent webinar looking at audio in Premiere Pro CC.

A very cool feature that's hidden in a very tiny place is the ability to record voice-overs to the Timeline.

This short video tutorial explains where it is and how it works.

ARTICLE: MOTION 5
Replicate a Custom Background

This article grew out of my class at USC where one of my students created a background in Photoshop that consisted of a series of repeating logos.

This got me thinking about how to create a custom animated background filled with logos - or other shapes - using Motion.

Turns out, this is a task perfectly designed for the Replicator tool and this article explains how it works.

VIDEO: PREMIERE PRO CC 2014
Separate Audio Channels

This video is an excerpt from a recent webinar looking at audio in Premiere Pro CC.

We often need to convert audio from stereo into dual-channel mono, or separate the audio from the video.

This short video tutorial explains how to create dual-channel mono clips, along with how and when to use options that extract or break-apart audio clips.

VIDEO: PREMIERE PRO CC 2014
Move Clips and Sequences to Adobe Audition

This video is an excerpt from a recent webinar looking at audio in Premiere Pro CC.

Premiere has some very nice audio tools. But, for serious audio repair or mixing, Adobe Audition is a much better choice.

This short video tutorial illustrates how to send clips and sequences from Premiere to Audition and how to bring them back.

VIDEO: PHOTOSHOP CC
Remove Scratches & Creases

[ Sorry, I had the wrong link last week. Let's try again.]

The Spot Healing Brush in Photoshop is very close to magic. This merges pixels to hide scratches, creases and other blemishes and make an old photo look undamaged.

Many old photos have been poorly stored or treated. This tool allows you to repair the worst of the damage.

In this video excerpt from a recent webinar, I show you how to use the Spot Healing Brush.
