WELCOME BACK!

Larry Jordan I have big news and bad news this week.  The big news is that after several months of planning our company has moved into some really cool new offices. Moving day was last Friday.

The bad news is, like everyone else who has ever moved from Point A to Point B, boxes are everywhere and nothing is working quite right. I've spent the weekend dealing with server, router, Internet and data transfer issues. Currently, our server is up while the Internet is down.

Oh!  And if you tried to call us any time after Wednesday last week, our phone system is down, too.  Sigh...

But...! What makes our new offices worth all the work is that they are 2,500 square feet of very exciting audio and video production space.  When I first saw this space, my brain exploded with ways we can use it to improve and expand our training. It also includes a  classroom so we can offer advanced training to individuals and private groups!

I can't wait to get us moved in so I can share these new ideas with you. It will be great!

I'll give you a tour next week, when we get a few more boxes put away and I rediscover my desk; which, ah,  got lost in shipping. So I'm back to typing on an apple crate. We have installed a brand new network and servers, new phone system, new audio gear, new computers and a new studio.  (I even treated myself to the new 5K iMac...!)

I'll be writing about all of it as we bring it online. I'm eager to share with you what I've learned, the gear we chose and why.

However, all this moving and crisis management means that I just didn't have time to write anything new this week. So, I'm including three articles on running a business, plus an interesting collection of Short Notes and two excellent interviews from The Buzz.

Small notes bullet Shutterstock, Inc. introduced Sequence, an in-browser editing tool designed to provide an easy way for anyone to create and quickly share videos with colleagues and clients. Sequence allows users to seamlessly integrate their own footage and music with Shutterstock's collection of more than 2 million high-quality video clips and music tracks.

The software requires Chrome. Here's the link.

Telestream, the leading provider of digital media tools and workflow solutions, announced the immediate availability of Wirecast 6.0, the latest version of its popular live streaming software. Wirecast is the industry's only cross-platform, all-in-one live streaming production software that enables capture, live production and encoding of live streams for broadcast to multiple servers and platforms simultaneously.

Small notes bullet Imagineer Systems released a free update to Mocha (v.4.1). If you haven't played with this planar tracking system, you are missing some incredible technology to track objects that you might not think are trackable. Watch the demo.

WEBINARS ON HIATUS FOR ONE MORE WEEK

Due to the move to our new office, we are postponing our weekly webinar this week. They should resume on Nov. 19.  Subjects should be posted by the end of this week.

Here's our webinar registration page.

FEATURED BUZZ INTERVIEW: JESSICA SITOMER

Buzz newsletter bullet This week's Digital Production Buzz had three interesting interviews: Dror Gill, Jonathan Handel and Jessica Sitomer.

Jonathan Handel, entertainment labor reporter for The Hollywood Reporter, has an insightful report on the current conflicts between Actors Equity (theater), SAG-AFTRA (screen) and producers who want to stream live productions. The issue, we discover, is about more than money, as Jonathan explains.

Listen to Jonathan's interview here.

Jessica Sitomer, president of The Greenlight Coach, talks about the challenges in overcoming complacency and not letting the day-to-day business of living get in the way of advancing your career.  If you are looking for a jump start to boosting your job-hunting, this interview is it.

Listen to Jessica's interview here.

Listen to the entire show here.

Thanks to the folks at Take1 Transcriptions, you can read, as well as listen to each show. Read this week's show transcript here. (You'll also find show transcripts on each Buzz show page.)

ARTICLES THIS WEEK

Generic newsletter bullet I'm getting a lot of requests following our Job Skills webinar last week, and Jessica Sitomer's interview this week, for more tips on how to start an editing business.

So, I have two articles and a blog that look at the business of the business.

Plus, I've updated our Top 3 Lists. Have a great week.

COMMENTARY
How To Start an Editing Business

I get a lot of emails asking how to start a business as an editor.

In this article, I present seven steps that will help you make the best decisions on starting your own company.

And, surprisingly, a love of technology - or editing - is not enough to survive in our industry today.

Read the article here.

BLOG
Can You Still Have a Career in Editing?

This article grew out of three emails, each talking about the dismal state of our industry.

In fact, media was rated as one of the ten worst college degrees in terms of income potential.

Gosh it was depressing.

So, I wrote this blog to help put things in better perspective.

ARTICLE
Create a Workflow That Makes You Money

Editing, like running a business, requires efficiency. There is so much to do to create a great program, that you don't want to waste time doing the same work more than once.

This article details a workflow that answers the question: "What Should I Be Doing Right Now?"  Spend some time at the beginning of a project thinking about how you want to get yourself organized and you'll save a ton of time later in the project.

I've taught this system in all my classes and practiced it personally for year. If you don't have your own system, use mine. Then, customize it to make it your own.
