WELCOME BACK!

Larry Jordan Happy November. Things are finally cooling down around here - there's a definite touch of "winter is coming" in the air. Which I really enjoy.

November is shaping up to be an exciting month for us. After months of work, we have a number of very cool announcements to share with you throughout the month - the first will be in next week's issue. This is why I only have two articles this week - there are way too many distractions around here at the moment.

However, one of those two articles is really important: a potential problem between 3rd-party SSD drives and Yosemite. Be sure to read this article if you own an SSD drive.

Also, our special pricing on improving job skills is ending in a couple of weeks. Be sure to get your copy before this special offer ends.

OH! I decided to purchase the 5K iMac - it arrives later this week. I'll write my review as soon as it arrives and let you know what I think.

SHORT NOTES

Clayton sent me this article from EOSHD:

"Pros are wondering what the benefit of 4K is to them in terms of overall image quality, when mastered and delivered for 2K / 1080p. A lot of work is still shot in 1080p and cameras like the Canon C300 are the workhorses of the moment."

Actually, there is a big benefit in color space when down-sampling 4K to 2K or smaller, as this article makes clear. I learned a lot reading it.

Here's the link.

Small notes bullet Digital Anarchy just released a free plugin that does the opposite of their popular deflicker plugin, Flicker Free. Their new Flicker Freak adds flicker to video. It simulates a malfunctioning light that's strobing on and off. A common dramatic effect used in horror movies. Particular cheesy, low budget ones.

And speaking of cheesy and low budget - here's their demo reel.

WEBINARS ON HIATUS FOR TWO WEEKS

Sigh... Work is interfering with writing and webinars. So, I've put our weekly webinars on hold till the middle of November.

Not to worry, webinars will start again on Wednesday, Nov. 12. I'll let you know future topics in next week's issue of this newsletter.

FEATURED BUZZ INTERVIEW: MICHAEL KAMMES

Buzz newsletter bullet This week's Digital Production Buzz looks at two sides of creating a documentary. We started with Darroch Greer, the producer/co-director of "The Millionaires' Unit," a film on naval aviation in World War I.

Then, we switched gears and talked with the post-production creative team at AlphaDogs that handled the effects and color grading for the project.

This film took seven years to produce. Discover how Darroch did it, and what their challenges were.

Listen to Darroch's interview here.

Listen to the AlphaDogs interview here.

Listen to the entire show here.

Thanks to the folks at Take1 Transcriptions, you can read, as well as listen to each show. Read this week's show transcript here. (You'll also find show transcripts on each Buzz show page.)

TWO NEW ARTICLES THIS WEEK!

Generic newsletter bullet I have two new articles this week. The first grew out of an interview on The Buzz.

The second came from an email conversation with a reader.

And, as always, I've updated our Top 3 lists.  Enjoy!

COMMENTARY
3rd-Party SSD Problems with Yosemite

There is a serious compatibility issue between 3rd-party SSD drives and Yosemite; the latest version of OS X.

Depending upon how you have them configured - they may not work after you upgrade.

If you have an Apple SSD drive, this article does NOT affect you.

If you have a 3rd-party SSD, you need to read this article before you upgrade - or if you are having problems after upgrading.

Read the article here.
