WEBINARS ON HIATUS FOR TWO WEEKS

I've got several large projects to finish by the end of the month, so we are putting our weekly webinars on hold for two weeks.

Not to worry, webinars will start again on Wednesday, Nov. 12. I'll let you know future topics in upcoming issues of this newsletter.

FEATURED BUZZ INTERVIEW: MICHAEL KAMMES

Buzz newsletter bullet This week's Digital Production Buzz had three excellent interviews with Paul Babb, Brandon Parvini and Michael Kammes.

Michael has started a new educational web series called "5 Things." His goal is to explain the key factors behind a specific technology, without getting involved in try to sell anything.

Listen to Michael's interview here.

Listen to the entire show here.

Thanks to the folks at Take1 Transcriptions, you can read, as well as listen to each show. Read this week's show transcript here. (You'll also find show transcripts on each Buzz show page.)

FIVE NEW ARTICLES THIS WEEK!

Generic newsletter bullet I have five new articles this week, two of which were suggested by readers.

Three of them discuss audio, one is an FCP X tip that the reader just couldn't find on the web. And one is a fascinating look back in history at why we ended up with the frame rates we use everyday. I thought I understood this and I was right - and wrong - as you'll see.

As always, I've updated our Top 3 lists.  Enjoy!

VIDEO: FINAL CUT PRO X
How to Create Split Edits

Split edits allow us to see one thing, and hear another, without losing sync between audio and video.

They are my favorite method of trimming.

In this short video tutorial, I explain what they are and how they work.

ARTICLE: MOTION 5.x
Add and Modify Audio in Motion 5.x

Managing audio in Motion 5 is not as easy as video, but it can be done.

And, you can do a lot with it.

In this tutorial, I show how to add, modify and delete audio clips into Motion. Then, how to modify audio levels and pan using behaviors or keyframes.

I also show how to fade all audio clips to black at the same time.

VIDEO: FINAL CUT PRO X
Work with Multichannel Audio

Multichannel audio (that is, audio with more than one channel) is increasingly common.

And FCP X makes working with all the different channels easier than ever.

In this video tutorial, I show you what a multichannel clip is, how to access all the different channels, how to adjust levels independently, how to trim and mute the channels you need.

ARTICLE: FINAL CUT PRO X
Enable a Video Monitor

This article was suggested by a reader, who was having problems getting a separate video monitor to work with FCP X.

Read what Tony discovered, along with two extra tips supplied by me.

ARTICLE: THE HISTORY OF VIDEO
The History Behind Frame Rates

I thought I knew this story - how we ended up with frame rates of 25 and 30 for video.

Except, while I wasn't wrong, the history behind it is more complex - and weird - than I thought.

Reader Derek Roff decided to do some digging and discovered some truly bizarre facts.

Take a quick break and read this article. You'll have fun learning what you didn't know before.
