WELCOME BACK!

Larry Jordan Four new articles for you this week, plus new products in the Short Notes, an interesting Buzz interview, and a special offer.

This has been a month filled with big news. Two weeks ago, Adobe released updates to all its Creative Cloud applications. Last week. Apple released their latest operating system - Yosemite - along with a ton of new hardware.  Finally, later today, Apple says they'll release the 8.1 update to iOS.

If "NEW!" is a word you like, then these times were made for you.  But... I'm a bit more hesitant when upgrading systems that are critical to my business. For this reason, my first article this week talks about my philosophy on when to upgrade.  (And, for the record, this is a major update of an article that I first wrote in 2007.)

A CAUTION FOR FCP 7 EDITORS

Apple has not formally said whether Final Cut Pro 7 will run under Yosemite. (Nor will they because, from Apple's point of view, Final Cut Pro 7 is no longer developed or supported.)

However, from my perspective, I would be VERY cautious upgrading any system that you want to use for either DVD Studio Pro or Final Cut Pro 7.  The best thing to do is to reserve a system specifically for these two applications and don't update it. I currently have an older Mac Pro running 10.6.8 specifically to support these two applications.

Another option is to create a dual-boot system containing both Yosemite and an older version of the OS. Here's an article that explains how.

SHORT NOTES

Earlier this week, Red Giant released Offload, a brand new standalone application for reliable backup of footage in the field. Available alone or as part of the Red Giant Shooter Suite, Offload makes the often unreliable and tedious task of backing up files from camera card to laptop and external drives a hassle-free experience. Offload is media and camera agnostic, and requires no additional equipment used in the normal footage offload process.

Small notes bullet Last week, Sorenson Media released the latest version of Squeeze Desktop, their workhorse video encoding tool that will render the highest-quality video and audio files for professionals and hobbyists alike. Manipulate resolution, file output, and other specifications to create the finished video product you need. Use Squeeze to encode videos that you've created in Final Cut Pro, Avid, or Adobe Premiere to ensure that they come out looking as good as you imagined.

FOUR NEW ARTICLES THIS WEEK!

Generic newsletter bullet Four new articles this week, starting with my philosophy on upgrading software. This is really important because it can help you prevent problems.

Then, an article on the new 5K iMac, the "hidden secrets" of the View menu, and a couple quick tips on text animation.

And, as always, I've updated our Top 3 lists.  Enjoy!

LARRY'S PHILOSOPHY ON UPGRADES

As soon as a new version of anything is announced, I get flooded with questions on whether and when to upgrade.

I first wrote this article in 2007. But,  the release last week of Yosemite gave me an excuse to go back and totally revise this article.

While my basic opinions haven't changed, my timelines and procedures have.

APPLE RELEASES NEW 5K iMAC

Last week saw a flood of new hardware from Apple, including the incredible new 5K iMac.

Part of my surprise was that I remember - and it wasn't that long ago - that a high-quality HD video monitor cost upwards of $20,000.

So, I wrote an article about the new iMac - what it's good for and when you should consider it.
