WELCOME BACK!

Larry Jordan SEVEN new articles this week -- for both Apple and Adobe!  (The creative muse was running strong...)

First, though, in two weeks I'm doing a webinar looking at 3rd-party plugins for Final Cut Pro X. I'm open to suggestions on what to cover. Each webinar generally looks at about 15 plug-ins, so send me an email about what you want me to talk about. (Feel free to recommend a plug-in that you wrote.)

Plus, some cool Short Notes, a great Buzz interview and, as always, an update to all our Top 3 lists.

SAVE $70 ON OUR ORIGINAL FCP X TRAINING

Effective February 1, we are removing our original Final Cut Pro X - Complete training from our store to prevent confusion with our current training.

This was, hands-down, our most popular training. And, now, you can SAVE $70 when you purchase either the download or the DVD before midnight, Feb. 1. (After that, it will only be available to subscribers.)

If you are holding off on the Final Cut upgrade (but still want to learn how FCP works), or just want a piece of history covering the launch of the original FCP X, enter LASTCHANCE as the Coupon Code during check-out and save $70 automatically on your own personal copy.

Here's the link to the FCP X Complete download.

SHORT NOTES

Here's a fast way to determine the duration and format of a video or audio file. Select the clip in the Finder and type Cmd+I. This displays the Get Info dialog. Look in the More Info section to see duration, format, and other technical specs. This technique works for audio and QuickTime files, but not MP4 files.

We now have all our "4K and Final Cut Pro X" panel discussions posted to our YouTube channel. In less than a week, these interviews have had thousands of views.  If you want to know the state of storage, metadata, stock footage or archiving, there's no better place to learn than from these experts.  (By the way, we'll be adding these movies to our subscription site during the coming week.)  Here's the link.

Thinking of history, don't forget that we are now archiving all my past weekly newsletters on-line on our website. (My monthly newsletters, dating back to 2004, were never archived. Sigh...) Click this link, or the Newsletter Archives button in the sidebar on our Home Page.

NEW WEBINARS

I haven't updated the registration website yet, but we have two new webinars planned for February, with one more still to come.
  • Feb. 5: 3rd-Party Plug-ins for Final Cut Pro X
  • Feb. 12: Color Correction in Adobe Premiere Pro CC
  • Feb. 19: TBA. (Suggest something, I'm looking for ideas.)

Registration will be ready and open by next Monday's newsletter. For now, just save these dates.

LARRY IS GOING TO BVE2014 -- LONDON

The largest industry trade show in England is BVE and I'm heading to London in late February to present at the show. I'm still researching my talks, but there will be a lot of interesting ideas to cover.

I'll have more details as we get closer. For now, click here to register. All my talks are on the show floor and free to all attendees. Please stop by and say hello - I would enjoy the chance to meet you.

DIGITAL PRODUCTION BUZZ
IS GOING TO NAB 2014

For the sixth year in a row, the Digital Production Buzz is the official podcast of the National Association of Broadcasters 2014 trade show (NAB).  This year, our coverage will be even bigger and better.

We are taking our largest production team ever - more live shows, more interviews, more video -- more of everything that makes our NAB coverage the best in the world.

I'll have plenty of details as NAB gets closer. If you are looking for a free pass to get in the exhibit halls, here's the link. Ignore the code on the page and register using code: LV6239. (This gives us the credit.)

THIS WEEK'S FEATURED BUZZ INTERVIEW

Buzz newsletter bullet On the Digital Production Buzz last week, we interviewed Michael Hiltzik, Pulitzer-prize winning business columnist for the Los Angeles Times, about the recent court decisions affecting "Net Neutrality."

In this interview, Michael explains what Net Neutrality is, why media creators need to pay attention and the recent court decisions that are jeopardizing it.

This is an issue that concerns all of us and, if you need a fast background education, this interview is the perfect place to start.

Listen to Michael Hiltzik's interview here.

Listen to the entire show here.

We are now offering complete text transcripts for each Digital Production Buzz episode, courtesy of Take1 Transcription. View the transcript here.

SEVEN NEW ARTICLES THIS WEEK!  (wow...)

Generic newsletter bullet I have four new articles and three new videos this week covering both Apple and Adobe software.  There's lots of interesting things to read.

Plus, as always, I've updated our Top 3 lists.  Enjoy!

ARTICLE: FINAL CUT PRO X
The Secret Options of Final Cut Pro X

Normally, these tips are not released to civilians....

But, these tricks are so cool - and SOOO not obvious - that I just had to share them.

Just don't tell anyone where you heard them.

FIRST LOOK:  POND5 PLUG-IN
The Pond5 Plug-in to Adobe Premiere Pro

This week, Pond5 released a brand-new extension for Premiere Pro CS6 and CC that makes working with stock footage faster and easier than ever - all without leaving Premiere.

This is a "First Look" at what this new extension is, what it does and how it works.

If Premiere is your editing tool of choice, take a look at what Pond5 has to offer.

VIDEO: FINAL CUT PRO X
IMPORT MEDIA AND CHOOSE PREFERENCES

Media management is one of the most revised and confusing aspects of the latest version of Final Cut Pro X.

This video excerpt from last week's webinar looks at importing media and how to choose the right import preferences for your project.

This video goes into depth about managing media in Final Cut, as well as defining basic terms to help you understand what the application is doing.

ARTICLE: ADOBE AUDITION
Create Busses, Sub-mixes, and Stems

This article sprang from a challenge a recent client gave me: Improve the quality of their audio, yet take less than 30 minutes per project.

Busses are a great way to get more control over all the tracks in your mix - but that's only true when you know how they work.

This article explains what busses are, how to create them, and how to export stems for both Adobe Premiere Pro and Apple Final Cut Pro X.

ARTICLE: FINAL CUT PRO X
Trim Connected Clips and Connected Storylines

This was an article I wanted to write for a while and, this week, I finally had the time.

Trimming is the process of adjusting where two clips touch -- and the Primary Storyline makes trimming easy. But trimming connected clips is an entirely different story.

In this step-by-step tutorial, I show you how to trim connected clips, then explain the advantages of converting them into connected storylines for additional trimming there.

Plus, as a bonus, I showcase a very cool, but little-known, tip on how to use the Position tool in the Primary Storyline to create better timing between  clips.

This article includes techniques I use in almost every edit I do in FCP X.

VIDEO: FINAL CUT PRO X
Create New Libraries

Time to get back to media management again.

This video is an excerpt of last week's webinar on media management inside Final Cut.

In this short video tutorial, I show you how to create new libraries, how to find out what is stored inside a library, and how to manage your libraries.

VIDEO: FINAL CUT PRO X
Copy / Move Events

This is the third of three videos this week looking at media management.

In this excerpt from last week's webinar on media management inside Final Cut, we look at how to create, copy, move and manage events inside Final Cut.

In this short video tutorial, I also explain the difference between managed and external media and which to use if you are sharing media between projects.

Learn Apple Compressor 4.1

With the release of Final Cut Pro X v10.1, Apple also updated Compressor to version 4.1 An all new interface, improved compression settings and better monitoring. So much changed, in fact, that we went back and re-recorded all our training for the new version.
  • Better organized
  • More informative
  • Tighter focus on making your images look great.
These days, everything we do ends up on the web.
Which means that if we don't know how to compress our video to make it look good, all our work during production and post is wasted.
