TIME TO SAY GOOD-BYE TO 2013...

Larry Jordan This is my last newsletter for 2013.. but, oh my, does 2014 look exciting!

I have four new articles this week, including an in-depth look at the new Mac Pro.

Happy New Year! And may 2014 be better for all of us than 2013.  I'll talk with you again next year.

UPGRADE PRICING EXTENDED TILL JAN. 7

Our latest training on Final Cut Pro X v10.1 is gaining rave reviews from all over the world. (And sales have been great, thanks to you!)

134 movies - more than 15 hours of training - all designed to get you up to speed with this new version quickly. New training for a new version of FCP X.

I designed this training to get you started in a single chapter: Chapter 2: Quick Start. OR, just watch the movies with "NEW" in their title to find out the new features. OR, watch everything to master Apple's latest software.

Whether you are a new or experienced user, you'll learn more than you ever expected from our training.

Click here to purchase your copy today! (If you are an existing user, we've extended upgrade pricing until Jan. 7. Check your email for the upgrade code.)

THE NEW VERSION OF MOTION 5.1

While Final Cut Pro X got a major upgrade, and Compressor had some significant work done, Motion 5 just added a few new features:
  • Optimized playback and rendering using dual GPUs in the new Mac Pro
  • FxPlug 3 with custom plug-in interfaces and dual-GPU support
  • Faster project loading, especially for complex projects
  • Share directly to YouTube at 4K resolutions
  • Spanish language localization.
The one that will benefit us the most is the new FxPlug architecture, though not immediately. This will allow developers to create even cooler effects with more flexible interfaces and controls.

LARRY'S 4K SEMINAR

By the way, now that both FCP X and the Mac Pro are out, we are full-speed-ahead on our 4K & Final Cut Pro X seminar. (And, yes, I'm bringing the new Mac Pro to the seminar so you can check it out for yourself!)

One-day ONLY - Tuesday, Jan. 14 - in Burbank, CA.

This is going to be a great way to explore the challenges of shooting and editing high-resolution media.

COLLABORATION AND ARCHIVING

I got a lot of letters this past week asking about the best way to collaborate, share files, and archive files for Final Cut Pro X v10.1

I'm currently working on a series of articles to answer those questions. Expect more about this during January.

THIS WEEK'S FEATURED BUZZ INTERVIEW

Buzz newsletter bullet This week on The Buzz, we featured seven of our regulars looking back at the key trends of 2013:
  • Philip Hodgetts - technology
  • Michael Kammes - editing systems
  • Jerome Courshon - distribution
  • Cirina Catania - producing
  • Michele Yamazaki - plug-ins
  • Ned Soltz - cameras
  • Jessica Sitomer - job hunting
The show was a wide-ranging, interactive discussion that covered a lot of ground in a short period of time. If you want a briefing on all the key issues, treat yourself  and listen to all of it.

Then, join us this Thursday, as the same group of industry pundits puts their careers on the line and scopes out the trends we need to watch for 2014.

Listen to the entire show here.

We are now offering complete text transcripts for each Digital Production Buzz episodes, courtesy of Take1.tv. Due to the holiday, the transcript for this week's show will be posted on Monday.

FOUR NEW ARTICLES THIS WEEK!

Generic newsletter bullet I have four new articles this week, including a detailed review on the new Mac Pro, along with suggestions on how to configure it. Tons of great reading and lots to think about.

Plus, as always, I've updated our Top 3 lists.  Enjoy!

ARTICLE: THE NEW MAC PRO
The New Mac Pro: Ridiculously Fast!

The new Mac Pro is out and I've spent the last week working with one.

In this article, I share what I've learned -- how to set it up, what its like to edit with one, where the Mac Pro fits in and when you are better off buying an iMac.

Plus, I provide configuration suggestions on what you need to know in buying a system for yourself. If you are thinking about a new Mac Pro, you need to read this article.

ARTICLE: FINAL CUT PRO X
Thoughts on Editing with FCP X v10.1

I've been editing with the latest version of Final Cut Pro X for a while.

In this article, I share my thoughts on what I like, what has problems, some hidden tricks and key workarounds you need to know.

And, as long as I was sharing my opinion, I started a wish list of new features that I'm hoping Apple adds in the future.

ARTICLE: COMPRESSOR 4.1
Hardware Acceleration

New with this release of Compressor is hardware acceleration for both QuickTime and MPEG-4 movies that use the H.264 codec.

This article explains what this acceleration is, when you should use it, and when it creates problems.

If you are spending hours each week compressing video, you need to read this article. Because you'll discover a technique that could cut compression times up to 75%!

ARTICLE: MAC OS X - MAVERICKS
Create a Dual-Boot Mac OS X System Disk

When I started researching this article, I figured this would be easy to learn. Except the most recent article I could find using Google - or Apple's support website, was two years old.

A dual-boot system allows you to install and switch between two different operating system; for example, OS X 10.7.5 and 10.9.1, or Mac and Windows.

This detailed article walks you through the entire process step-by-step. It isn't hard, but you need to know what to do, or you can really screw things up.
