SPECIAL OFFER - AND NEW ARTICLES!
Larry Jordan
The tempo of life is picking up around here. Two new articles this week - and a special offer on a new webinar. Plus, we are working on a big event that I can announce this Thursday.

A CORRECTION

Last week, I shared my concerns about how Video Blocks was marketing its products. While I stand by my concerns, I made an error that I need to correct.

Video Blocks is a ten-year old, Virginia-based, privately-held company that has given away millions of free clips to hundreds of thousands of members around the world.  Founded by Joel Holland, they adopted the same business model as that used by Netflix, Audible, and other companies by offering a free trial period to their subscription service before payments start. (30 days for Netflix, 7 days for Video Blocks.)

I wrote that Video Blocks did not disclose that getting the free downloads required registering for a paid subscription. My statement was not correct. On the second page of the subscription sign-up, prior to completing the registration, there are three separate disclosures explaining that the free products are free and that you have a seven day window to cancel your subscription before charges start to apply.

In a phone call and several emails with Ben Sachs, product manager for Video Blocks, I was assured that they take customer service seriously, that they have a 91% customer approval rating, and that if I get any complaints I should forward them directly to him so they can get resolved.

While I personally wish they would disclose the credit card requirement in their promotional email blast, their practices do appear to be in line with others in the industry.  If you have further questions, please  contact [email protected]. Thanks.

SPECIAL OFFER ON JOB HUNTING WEBINAR

Our webinar last week on "Job Hunting and Survival in Today's Economy" was a great success. Lots of interest and questions. So much so, that I want to make you a special offer.

All of us are struggling with how to look for work, keep clients, negotiate better rates, and survive in this era of shorter deadlines and smaller budgets. As I mentioned in my Amsterdam speech, one of my key goals is sharing skills and tips to help every editor find work. And this webinar can definitely help.

If you are a subscriber to our video training, this webinar is available as part of your subscription. I recommend you watch it as soon as you have time.

For those who are not subscribers, this week ONLY, you can download this webinar for only $9.99. Save almost 60%!

Put my job hunting tips to work for you, click here and enter Coupon Code SAVE15 during checkout.

FEATURED BUZZ INTERVIEW

One of the questions I get a lot is how to handle frame rate conversions. Last week, on The Buzz, we spoke with Russo Anastasio, President of Shapeshifter.  Recently, he handled all the format conversion for the PBS special: "Mel Brooks: Make Some Noise."  And I was very interested in how he described the process of up-resing SD to HD and frame rate conversions.

Listen to Russo Anastasio's interview here.

Listen to the entire show here.

We are now offering complete text transcripts for each Digital Production Buzz episodes, courtesy of Take1.tv.  Read the transcript for this show here.

THREE NEW ARTICLES THIS WEEK!

I have two new articles, plus a link to my advanced trouble-shooting tips for Final Cut Pro X. And, as always, I've updated our Top 3 lists.

AND, for all you Premiere fans, as soon as Adobe releases the new version, we will be covering it with both articles and webinars. You are not forgotten.

Enjoy.

ARTICLE: FINAL CUT PRO X
Use Auditions for Voice-Overs

Auditions are new with Final Cut Pro X. They allows us to quickly compare two or more clips in the Timeline to see which works the best.

However, for many editors, they remain a mystery. So, in this article, I provide a very easy, practical example of how to use Auditions to select the best voice-over.

ARTICLE: FINAL CUT PRO X
Use Compound Clips to Rename Clips

Jay Jackson, of the University of Michigan, suggested this tip. Well, actually, he wrote most of it.

If you are looking for a new way to use compound clips effectively, read this article.

And if you are trying to figure out WHAT a compound clip is and how to create it, well, read this article, too.

ARTICLE: FINAL CUT PRO X
Advanced Trouble-shooting

This is a reminder, that if you haven't looked at this article, you should take a minute and read it.

Here, I've assembled an all-new batch of trouble-shooting questions, answers, and tips.

Along with some general purpose Macintosh trouble-shoot suggestions, as well.

If only to decrease my emails, please bookmark this page - there's a ton of stuff you can use today to get  out of trouble and keep your system running smoothly.

NEW TRAINING
Learn Apple Compressor 4

Ultimately, all our projects end up on the web. Which means that if we don't know how to compress our video to make it look good, all our work during production and post is wasted.

In this in-depth video training, Larry Jordan shows you how to make the most of Apple Compressor 4.
