Greetings!
TONS OF GOODIES THIS WEEK!
Larry Jordan
We've got two new detailed product reviews, five new videos, and a thought-provoking blog for this week. PLUS, new webinars and some cool "Short Notes."  Lots of new stuff!

First, though, let me apologize for not writing last week's issue. I was in Amsterdam giving a speech at the SuperMeet and just didn't have the time to write a newsletter. I'm making up for it this week with extra content. So, let's get right into it.

LARRY KEYNOTES IBC SUPERMEET!

I was asked to speak at the IBC SuperMeet last Sunday in Amsterdam on the topic of "Is Final Cut Pro X Ready for Professional Use?"

In preparing for this speech, I realized that the answer required more than a demo, it required thinking about the role change plays in our industry. When we are forced to make "bet the company" decisions, change becomes very frightening. So, about half my speech explored the intersection of technology with human behavior, and the other half was a series of demos of some amazing new Final Cut Pro X utilities.

You can watch my entire speech here. And I have a blog below that provides some additional insight.

COOL NEW UTILITIES FOR FINAL CUT X

In preparing for my SuperMeet speech, I created a webinar looking at nine cool new utilities for Final Cut Pro X. These are some amazing new tools, all made possible by the support Final Cut provides for XML.

Subscribers can view this entire presentation, free, as part of their membership. Look for Webinar 108.

If you are not yet a subscriber, we are adding some of these demos to my YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/LarryJordanFCP. With more than 300 movies posted - and close to one million views - this is a great place to learn more about both Apple and Adobe software.

You can also purchase a download of Webinar 108 here. These are some great tools, that can truly simplify your editing.

MANAGING MEDIA IN FINAL CUT PRO X

No subject generates more questions in my email, than media management. So, our most recent webinar focused exclusively on how to organize media, explain import options, illustrate using keywords, managing Events and Projects, and speeding final export.

Subscribers can view this entire presentation, free, as part of their membership. Look for Webinar 109.

You can also purchase a download of Webinar 109 here.  These tips are designed for both beginners and experienced users.

SHORT NOTE: FINAL CAT PRO

A couple days ago, I got a note from Jeroen den Bok in the Netherlands, who started a new company - called "FinalCatPro" - to develop new utilities for Final Cut Pro X. Rather than create effects, he has designed scripts and tools to speed workflow.

I haven't tested any of these, but they look interesting, so I'm sharing them with you.

UPDATE: WEBINAR SUPPORT FOR IOS

We are continuing to upgrade our subscription webinar library to ensure smoother playback on iOS devices that use cellular networks. This requires implementing HTTP Live Streaming along with our other video compression formats. As of yesterday, all webinars from 70 - 109 are updated and we are hoping to update about ten new sessions a week until we get caught up.

(Here's an article that describes the challenges in supporting video streaming on iOS devices. This issue only affects videos longer than about ten minutes.)

As always, please let us know if you are having any playback problems. It takes about eight hours to convert one master file, so it will take us a while to update everything.

FEATURED BUZZ INTERVIEW

This week, I want to feature two interviews from recent Buzz podcasts:
  • Marc Hamaker, Senior Manager of Product Marketing for Autodesk, talking about their recent move to software rental pricing and what makes their approach different from Adobe;s Creative Cloud.
  • Michael Kammes, the "Geek Groom," exploded across the Internet by capturing his own wedding using an eyebrow camera.  Here, he tells us what he did, why he did it, and the reactions of his now-famous-bride.
Listen to Marc Hamaker's interview here.

Listen to Michael Kammes' interview here.

Listen to the entire show here.

We are continuing to provide complete text transcripts for all Digital Production Buzz episodes, courtesy of Take1.tv.

Read the transcript for this show here.

SEVEN NEW ARTICLES THIS WEEK!

I have a new blog, two new product reviews, and four videos for you this week. Plus, as always, I've updated our Top 3 lists.

Enjoy.

LARRY'S BLOG
Seeking Perfection

Logo: Larry's Blog This blog is a look at the personal and emotional challenges of dealing with change in an industry that defines itself by change.

Why is change frightening and what can we do about it?

This is a further write-up of the thoughts I first presented in my IBC Supermeet speech.

PRODUCT REVIEW
G-Technology G-Dock ev

G-Technology logo When it comes to editing, storage is everything. It's even more important than your computer.

Recently, G-Technology released a new storage system called the G-Dock ev.

In this review, I look at what it does, how it does it, how fast it is and where it could fit into your production workflow.

Read the review here.

PRODUCT REVIEW
Contour Design: ShuttlePRO v2

Contour Design logo New Hampshire-based Contour Design has been making shuttles for more than a decade.

Recently, they released two new products and a major software upgrade. In this product review, I show you what these products are, how they work, how to use their software and illustrates how this could fit into your editing system.

NOTE: In this article, I use Final Cut Pro X as an example. However, these shuttles work equally well for FCP 7, Premiere, Avid, and many Windows systems.

Using Keywords

Keywords are at the heart of how Final Cut Pro X manages media, once you import it into your Event.

In this excerpt from a recent webinar, I explore how to automatically create keywords when you import media.

Then, I cover manually adding and removing keywords, plus provide a variety of tips showing how to use keywords to find exactly the shots you need.

VIDEO TUTORIAL: MARKER
From XMiL Workflow Tools

null Marker is a relatively new utility that makes it easy to find and label clips in the Finder that you are using in your Final Cut Pro X Project or Event.

If you are like me, and often import media without also copying it to the Event folder - "Because I really don't have time to get organized..." -  you are going to need this program.

VIDEO TUTORIAL: PRODUCER'S BEST FRIEND
From Intelligent Assistance

null The Producer's Best Friend is brand new from Intelligent Assistance.

If you need to deliver massively detailed reports at the end of a project, showing precise timecode locations of all stock footage, music cues, effects, transitions, and ... well, darn near everything; then you know how time-consuming this report can be.

Now, rather than taking days, Producer's Best Friend can create this report in seconds, and this video shows you how it works.

VIDEO TUTORIAL: FINAL CUT PRO X
Trashing Final Cut Pro X Preference Files

When Final Cut Pro X starts acting wacky, more often than not, its preference files have become corrupt.

Trashing preferences is absolutely the best first step you can take in any FCP X trouble-shooting.

I've written about this a lot, but I haven't recorded a video showing how to trash preferences for a long time.

So, now, to illustrate how to delete preference files in either OS X 10.7 or 10.8, here's the video!

NEW TRAINING
Learn Apple Compressor 4

Ultimately, all our projects end up on the web. Which means that if we don't know how to compress our video to make it look good, all our work during production and post is wasted.

In this in-depth video training, Larry Jordan shows you how to make the most of Apple Compressor 4.

Whether you are a new or experienced editor, this training will help you make your media look and sound great!
