This week, I taught a course at the Anderson Ranch on creating mini-documentaries.
Rather than jumping directly into production, which I dearly love, we started with the concept of planning before you shoot. Now, for some, this may appear obvious. But for people new to the craft, the whole concept of planning is, um, pretty perplexing.
Anyway, as I was developing the course, I started counting the number of interviews I've done for either broadcast or my podcast. I stopped counting when I reached over 2,000! Whew.
This caused me to start thinking about what makes for a good interview, whether live or on tape. And those thoughts form the basis of my lead story this week on interviewing.
I had a fun time teaching a great class. The students really got into producing a new 4-minute mini-doc each day for a week and turned out some very moving work. I'm looking forward to getting back into the office and catching up on my sleep.
HOME PAGE SLIDERS
Many of you have noticed our new
Home Page sliders. These two-screen gems are the brainchild of our web manager -
Tori Anderholt.
Each celebrates a specific event or holiday related to that day on the calendar. And, as you'll discover, Tori has a
VERY broad definition of what constitutes a holiday --
Happy Secondhand Wardrobe Day, anyone?
FEATURED BUZZ INTERVIEWI continued our exploration of the intersection of art and technology on the Digital Production Buzz by interviewing more artists at Anderson Ranch for last week's show. There is one that I especially want to highlight:
David Ellsworth.
David is a studio wood-turner and past president of the American Association of Wood-Turners. To hold one of his wood sculptures in your hands is to be in the presence of greatness. His work amazes me.
But, what is the relevance of wood to media? In a word - creativity. David's thoughts on creativity and the creative process are just as relevant for media folks as for wood folks. And I truly enjoyed our conversation.

GETTING READY FOR FALL
Everyone on our team is back in the office next week for the first time in more than a month, and I'm looking forward to sharing more news with you as we move into the fall.
Enjoy the remaining days of summer.
I have two new articles this week - plus, I've updated our Top 3 lists. Enjoy!
