IT'S A NEW RECORD!
Larry Jordan
NINE new articles and videos for you this week! Whew -- I got even more carried away than usual.

You'll find all the details below.

FEATURED BUZZ INTERVIEW

Last week, I highlighted an interview with
Benoit Fouchard, the Chief Strategy Officer of ATEME about a new compression standard for 4K images.

Well, we spoke with him again this week to learn more and discovered that this new codec is designed for mobile video and high-resolution images.

If you want to get the inside scoop on this new codec from the people who are designing it, you need to listen to Benoit.

Listen to his latest (second) interview.

Listen to his first interview.

LATEST WEBINAR

I'm getting caught up on my editing. Our latest webinar is now posted to both the Store and subscription library:

#96: Advanced Compression Tips for Compressor 4

EDITING TRUTHS WINNERS

Exactly one month ago today, we began the 2013 Edition of "Editing Truths for Better Living." Those aphorisms that the real-world just slaps up against the side of our head.

Wow! We got swamped. So, I'm posting four winners this week!

NEW ARTICLES THIS WEEK

I have three articles and six video tutorials this week. Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro X, Motion and Compressor. Something for everyone!

I've also updated my Top 3 lists. As always, the details are below.

TUTORIAL: FINAL CUT PRO X
Better Slow Motion

Conforming video allows you to create really smooth slow, or fast, motion.

In this article, I explain what this is and how to create it in Final Cut Pro X.

TUTORIAL:  PREMIERE PRO CS6
Broadcast Colors Filter

A few weeks ago, I created a video that illustrated how to read video scopes in Premiere Pro CS6.

At that time, Bobby asked me to explain the Broadcast Colors filter. Well, it took me longer than I expected, but here's the answer covering what this filter is, how to apply it, how to decide if you need it, and the trade-offs you face when using it.

VIDEO TUTORIAL: COMPRESSOR 4
Changing Video Frame Rates

Probably the hardest thing to deal with, when getting ready to edit, is how to edit video clip's running at different frame rates.

While you can use the conversion provided inside your editing software, you'll get better results using Compressor.

In this video, I show you how to convert a slow frame rate to a faster one, a faster frame rate to a slower one, and how to decide which will look better.

Watch the video here.

VIDEO TUTORIAL: MOTION 5
Create a Title Template For FCP X

One of the big benefits to learning Motion 5 is that you can create effects in Motion that appear as templates in Final Cut Pro X.

In this video tutorial, I illustrate how to create a simple full-screen info-graphic, style the text, modify a drop zone, add animation, then save it so it shows up as a template inside Final Cut Pro X.

Watch the video here.

VIDEO TUTORIAL: COMPRESSOR 4
Create a Compression Cluster

Clusters, the ability for multiple computers to work together to speed video compression, have existed for a long while in Compressor.

However, setting these up to work reliably is, ah, difficult.

There is a better way - use your processors as a cluster, rather than multiple computers. As you'll see in this video tutorial, this has the potential to cut your compression time in half!

TUTORIAL: FINAL CUT PRO X
Replace Edit

Apple changed the Replace Edit in Final Cut Pro X, when compared to Final Cut Pro 7.

In this article, I show you how it works, what your options are, and how to choose between them.

I also talk about Auditions, because they factor into deciding how to replace a clip.

Read the article here.

VIDEO TUTORIAL: FINAL CUT PRO X
Style Title Text

Unlike Final Cut Pro 7, there is a LOT of text formatting power in Final Cut Pro X.

Whether it is changing fonts on a letter-by-letter basis, adding outlines, glows and drop shadows, or saving your styles to use in the future, there is a lot you can do.

In this video tutorial, I show you what the options are and how they work.

Watch the video here.

VIDEO TUTORIAL: FINAL CUT PRO X
Animate Title Text

Now that you've got your text styled, you need to animate it.

While each title is different, there is a special title that can be customized in a wide variety of ways.

It's called the "Custom" title, and in this video tutorial, I'll show you different ways to configure it so it looks good in your projects.

Watch the video here.

VIDEO TUTORIAL: COMPRESSOR 4
Deinterlace Video

Yes, you can deinterlace video using Final Cut... but the quality isn't that great.

What's the best way to deinterlace video? Use Compressor -- except picking the best setting for the best image isn't exactly an obvious choice.

In this video tutorial, I show you the best way to delinterlace video - and provide you one of my favorite menu descriptions along the way.

Watch the video here.
