FEATURED BUZZ INTERVIEW

Our featured interview this week is something very different for the Buzz.  We interview commercial and fetish photographer Jeremy Danger.

At what point does art go from edgy, to "over-the-edge"? This interview is more about art and the process of creating it, than the technology Jeremy uses.

Some of his images I find captivating. Others, I find very unpleasant.  I was intrigued with talking to Jeremy about whether he thinks about his audience when creating images, what he sees his role in pushing the envelope artistically, and how he creates his images. You may be surprised at his answers.

SOMETHING QUICK - CAMERA ARCHIVES

Since I first learned about camera archives in Final Cut Pro X, I've been mostly unimpressed. While I think the ability to create archives of camera source material - especially video tape - is a good idea, I was not impressed that the only application that could open these archives was Final Cut Pro X.

As we all know, software changes, which is not what you want for an archive.

However, recently, I realized that it is easy to open an archive directly from the Finder. Simply right-mouse-click the archive's icon and select "Show Package Contents." Inside, you'll find one or more QuickTime movies containing all your archived media. This allows you to drag the movies out of the archive and store them any where you want.

Now, archives aren't such a bad thing because we can easily access all the archived media, even if we no longer have access to Final Cut Pro X.

NEW ARTICLES THIS WEEK

I have six new articles this week, including four short new video tutorials. I've also updated my Top 3 lists.

As always, the details are below.

TUTORIAL: FINAL CUT PRO X
Blend Modes

Blend modes, which were called "Composite Modes" in Final Cut Pro 7, allow us to combine textures between two images.

In this tutorial, I illustrate what blend modes are, how to create them, and provide examples on how to use them.

(By the way, if you use FCP 7 or Premiere, you'll find this article helpful, because all these editors have blend modes and the effects you can create are identical.)

INDUSTRY
Tips to Great Interviews

Last week, I published tips on how to be a great interview guest. This week, Michael Cox supplies tips on how to be a great interviewer.

If you need to interview anyone on camera or on mic, these tips will get you pointed in the right direction.

VIDEO TUTORIAL: ADOBE AUDITION CS6
How to Reduce Background Noise

We never PLAN to record bad audio, but, sometimes, the gremlins win.

In this short video tutorial, I show you two different ways to reduce background noise using Adobe Audition. One is automatic, and the other provides more precise manual control.

And, to answer your question, this feature does not exist in FCP X, FCP 7, or Premiere Pro.

Watch the video here.

VIDEO TUTORIAL: FINAL CUT PRO X
How to Create and Assign Roles

Roles are a new feature that appeared with the 10.0.3 update to FCP X.

Roles allow us to categorize, organize, and control video and audio elements in the Event Browser, Timeline, and export.

In this short video tutorial, I show you how to create new Roles, how to apply them to a clip, and how to use the Timeline Index to use Roles to find clips in the Timeline.

Watch the video here.

VIDEO TUTORIAL: FINAL CUT PRO X
Export Projects Using Roles

The last video tutorial explained how to create and apply Roles.

In this short video tutorial, I show you how to use Roles to create stems, or submixes, of your project automatically on export.

There are two ways to do this. This video shows the most popular method: creating a multi-track QuickTime movie.

Watch the video here.

VIDEO TUTORIAL: ADOBE AUDITION CS6
Change the Pitch of a Clip

Speak of a hidden feature....

The recording was great. The performer was full of enthusiasm, but, ah, missed that last note.  And no one noticed in the jubilant rush to finish the session.

Now, however, it sticks out like a sore thumb.  In this short video tutorial, I show you how to use Audition to change the pitch of an entire clip, or just one note.

If you are musician, this can be a life-saver. If you aren't, well, let's just say you can spend a lot of time giggling.

Watch the video here.
