APPLE UPDATES FINAL CUT PRO X --
WE HAVE NEW ARTICLES AND TRAINING!Larry Jordan

Apple released the most significant update for Final Cut Pro X since its initial release - v10.0.6.  And we have both new articles and new training that explains everything you need to know about these new features.

To start, at the end of this newsletter are five new articles covering some of these new features. Still to come are articles covering more new features:
  • Improved importing
  • Improved sharing
  • Improved multicam
  • Dual Monitor windows
  • R3D and MXF support
  • Improved connected clips
  • Improved compound clips
  • Improved transitions
  • Improved drop shadows
Plus, we are already in the studio recording almost twenty new training movies specifically covering these new features. And this new training will exclusively be available to our subscribers FIRST!

There's never been a better time to subscribe - three weeks ago we released a blockbuster bundle covering Adobe CS6. In the next week or so, we'll have all new training covering Final Cut Pro X. (And I'll have all the details in next week's newsletter.)

SHOULD YOU UPGRADE

Long-time readers of my newsletter know that I consistently recommend waiting after any major update to the Mac OS or Final Cut Pro. (Here's an article I wrote in 2008 about exactly this subject.)

However, in this case, the number of features and the amount of work Apple has put into this release encourages me to recommend you upgrade as soon as makes sense.

Here's the general rule: Never upgrade when you are about to finish a project. Finish the project, then upgrade.  However, if you are early into a project, or between projects, that's a good time to upgrade.

I've upgraded two of my three editing systems and, while I have not put them under extreme stress, things look good so far.

NEW FINAL CUT PRO X WEBINAR

This week, we shuffled our webinars around to provide an in-depth look at the new features in the 10.0.6 release of Final Cut Pro X. We only have a few seats left at each of our two shows, so don't wait, register NOW.

If you are a subscriber, you can attend any of our live webinars for free. If you are not yet a subscriber, you can attend for only $19.99. (This is also a good financial reason to become a subscriber.)

Subscribers, log in, then click here to register.

Everyone else, click here to register for the live webinar.

A recorded version of this webinar will be available for download on Monday of next week.

NEW ARTICLES THIS WEEK

I have five new articles this week, all covering new aspects of Final Cut Pro X.  I'll have more articles next week, covering more of the new features.

I also have updates to all three of our Top 3 Lists. Its been a very busy week, and I'm having a blast learning all the new stuff to share it with you.

As always, the details are below.

Create Chapter Markers

Yay!

Chapter markers are now supported in FCP X. Whew!

Here's the article that explains what you need to know - and, in true Apple fashion, they made them better.

Select Multiple Clip Ranges

One of the features I missed most from Final Cut Pro 7 was the ability to retain the In and Out in a clip, when viewing a different clip.

In the latest upgrade, Apple added this feature to FCP X.

Here's a short, step-by-step article that explains what you need to know.

Multichannel Audio Editing

Multichannel audio - with individual speakers on separate tracks - is a staple of documentary and corporate video.

However, it was difficult to edit in Final Cut Pro X - until, you guessed it, the latest update.

This is actually a major new feature in this release, and I take a detailed look at it in this article.  What Apple has done can greatly simplify your life.

Copy/Paste Clip Attributes

This is another highly requested feature - the ability to copy and paste selected effects or Inspector settings from one clip to another clip, or a group of selected clips.

This has been a long-time feature in Final Cut Pro 7 and Apple has now added it to FCP X - with an additional feature that FCP 7 never had.

Read the article here.

TECHNIQUE: FINAL CUT PRO X
Create Freeze Frames

Final Cut Pro X has always had the ability to create Hold frames - essentially a fancy form of a still frame.

However, Hold frames can't be moved between clips and they always have an Ease In/Ease Out included as part of the freeze.

Now, Apple gives us a second option - creating actual freeze frames, which you can move wherever you want, make any length you want, and which freeze on a dime and start up again just as fast.
