SEVEN NEW ARTICLES THIS WEEK!

I got into a writing frenzy this week: SEVEN new articles -- new Final Cut Pro X training, Motion 5 training, and Adobe video editing tutorials. All the details are later in this newsletter.

NEWS, GOSSIP, AND FREE STUFF
  • Adobe just released Prelude as a stand-alone application.  Click here to learn more about Prelude. Click here for my video training on using Adobe Prelude.
  • DV Expo is coming to Pasadena Sept. 19-21. This is always a fun show and I'll be there covering it for the Digital Production BuzzRegister here for conference and expo passes.
  • Rick Zanotti has invited me on eLearnChat HD on Sept. 11. We are talking about training in technology. I'm looking forward to the conversation
  • I'm doing another free webinar for Filmmaking Webinars on Sept. 27: Audio Editing Techniques for Video EditorsRegister here.
  • For those that plan ahead, I'll be presenting at Postapalooza in October.  Yes, its a long way away, but this is a killer post conference and I look forward to seeing you there. Here are the details.
UPCOMING WEBINAR ON AUTODESK SMOKE

This Wednesday, I'm doing a webinar on creating effects in Autodesk Smoke 2013.  If you, like me, are trying to figure out the node-based effects interface of Smoke, and trying to decide if the application is worth learning, you'll enjoy this webinar.

I want to show you how to create effects in Smoke more easily than you can create them in other editing packages. This session won't turn you into an effects master, but it will help you make the most of the free Smoke preview.

Remember, subscribers can attend any weekly webinar for free. I'll have new titles for September a bit later this month, as soon as I figure them out.

SEVEN NEW ARTICLES THIS WEEK

Whether you are looking for Final Cut Pro training, Adobe editing training, or just trying to make the most of the software you've got, I've got a host of new articles for you this week.

Plus, I've expanded our Top 3 lists to include the Top 3 most watched Webinars, and Top 3 most listened to Digital Production Buzz interviews.

All the details are below.

LARRY'S BLOG
Story Is Not Enough
Logo: Larry's Blog
This blog developed from some personal reflections I've been musing over this week.

Story is important, but it is not "all-important." Read this blog and tell me what you think.

Read the blog here.

VIDEO TUTORIAL: ADOBE MEDIA ENCODER
Creating Watch Folders

Watch Folders allow you to automate video compression using Adobe Media Encoder.

They allow you to create multiple versions of the same input file and save it locally or automatically send it to a remote FTP site.

Watch the video here.

TECHNIQUE: FINAL CUT PRO X
Re-linking Missing Media

Relinking missing media is new with the 10.0.3 release of Final Cut Pro X.

In this step-by-step technique, learn how and why to relink media in both the Timeline and the Event Browser.

READER REPORT: SONY PMW-100 CAMERA
Submitted by Trevor Ward

Trevor Ward recently took the new Sony PMW-100 to London to shoot documentary and interviews about the Olympics.

He wrote up his experiences using the camera which I want to share with you here.

VIDEO TUTORIAL: FINAL CUT PRO X
Creating and Modifying Auditions

Auditions are new with Final Cut Pro X.  In this video tutorial, I show you how to create them, how they work, and how you can modify them to meet your needs.

Plus, I show you a little-documented way to include only portions of clips in an Audition.

TECHNIQUE: MOTION 5
How to Stabilize Images

Motion 5 provides far more options on stabilizing shaky camera work than does Final Cut Pro X.

In this step-by-step technique, learn how to stabilize your images in Motion, then move them into Final Cut Pro X to include in your final project.

VIDEO TUTORIAL: ADOBE MEDIA ENCODER
Changing Key Preferences

Most of the preference settings in Adobe Media Encoder are fine -- but not all of them.

In this short video tutorial, I'll show you which ones to change and how to change them.
