Studying Bacteria

There are bacteria everywhere you go. Not all bacteria are bad, in fact, many bacteria help you in various ways: to digest your food, cure diseases, and even make your yogurt taste great. As the 7th grade life science students begin learning about bacteria, they walked around TCS to find some. After wiping their hands on keyboards, the floor, and handrails, they returned to the science lab to swab a nutrient rich, agar filled, pertri dish. The students will observe the bacteria as it grows.
Erupting Volcanoes!

6th grade students created their own volcanoes in Mrs. Kleinsteuber's Earth Science class. Each lab group was asked to build either a shield, composite or cinder-cone volcano which they named and shared with the class. The excitement happened when the baking soda and vinegar were added, and eruptions occured!

Exploring Animals through Venn Diagrams

First grade students are using Venn diagrams, graphic organizers that engage them in higher level thinking, to enhance their study of animals. They are learning the basic characteristics of each animal group and how to categorize these characteristics using a Venn diagram. As a group, they compared and contrasted fish and mammals in an interactive Venn diagram. Then, they created their own Venn diagram in a hands-on activity. The students are looking forward to a field trip to the aquarium next week, where they will explore sea animals first hand!
