One of the major roof problems arising from such cold temperatures is ice damming. The problem is compounded when the temperature rises, melting the snow and ice, and then drops again and freezes everything back up! Water EXPANDS as it freezes, and can back up behind roof flashings designed to keep water out.  Light snow blowing into vents, siding seams and building cracks is also a common wintertime problem.
