ALS ICE BUCKET CHALLENGEEvery August Until a Cure
|
The month of August will mark the beginning of another ice bucket challenge. Please consider donating your ice bucket challenge money to The Angel Fund for ALS Research.
Last year, we began a campaign - Step Up to Cure ALS - to raise $4 million to help Dr. Robert H. Brown, Jr. bring his research to human trials. We are halfway there thanks to our generous Angel Fund family. It would be amazing to be able to provide Dr. Brown with another $2 million to push his research ahead to get to these trials within the next year.
The Angel Fund is special. We are not a national charity - we are local. We have very low overhead and administrative costs. Our offices are located in the law firm of Nigro Pettipet and Lucas, courtesy of Directors Jan and Eugene Nigro. That means that The Angel Fund has no rent, no utility bills, no high-paid executives. Angel Fund President Rich Kennedy and the board members are not paid.
Why are they so passionate? Because most have lived through the heartbreak of seeing their loved one live with ALS and lose their battle to this horrific disease. They have made a commitment to support Dr. Brown and his researchers until a cure is found, the goal of our original Angel, Ginny DelVecchio. They have a sense of urgency to find a treatment and cure by supporting the gene silencing therapy. We know the patients and their families - and the patients know us.
The Angel Fund support provides Dr. Brown discretionary monies not available to him via other funding avenues and we know how important that is to his research and success.
The Angel Fund may be a smaller charity in comparison to others - but we are mighty - we have donated over $4.5 million to Dr. Brown over our existence with the help of our supporters.
We are proud to say that the total research expenditures incurred in 2014 was 90% of the Angel Fund's total expenditures (the remaining 10% attributable to administrative costs). We are so very fortunate to have so many Angel Fund family members that care so much and help us by hosting events, participating in the events, donating and volunteering. All for our mission - to find a treatment and cure for ALS.
So when it comes time for you to help increase awareness for ALS again this August, please remember that The Angel Fund supports ALS research, and that is what the challenge is all about.
And, thank you Pete Frates and Pat Quinn for your determination to create awareness for ALS ...You have changed the world!
Take the challenge during the month of August. Challenge friends and family and donate to The Angel Fund for ALS Research. Send your videos to us and we will display them on our website.
Every dollar counts in our mission to find a cure for ALS!
Donate today!
Sincerely,
Rich Kennedy
President

ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE
Join us on Sept. 12th
As everyone knows, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge swept the world last year. Pete Frates, and Pat Quinn started the phenomenon and we're proud to say that The Angel Fund was one of Pete's supported charities.
The Angel Fund, once again, will be holding a group ice bucket event for all our attendees at the end of the Walk at approximately 1:00 p.m.
We have plenty of water and ice and buckets, which will again be donated by Home Depot.
If you have a favorite bucket you'd like to use, please bring it along with you!
We welcome you to join in the ice bucket experience. Bring a change of clothes if you'd like as we have access to the church next to Wakefield Common in order for you to change after the challenge.
Let's make this a great continuation of our $4 million campaign - Step up to Cure ALS! We're halfway there - help us get the funds Dr. Brown and his fellow researchers need to find the cure!!
We look forward to seeing you and your team!

The Angel Fund
continues the campaign to raise $4,000,000 for
ALS research

The Angel Fund for ALS Research embarked on a fundraising campaign to raise $4,000,000 for ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) research last year. Through your generous contributions, we are halfway there!
This funding is being applied to an innovative approach to turning off mutant genes that cause ALS. The initial gene to be targeted will be SOD1.
This program is based on studies of gene silencing conducted at UMass Medical School.
The clinical program is a cooperative effort conducted jointly at UMass Medical School under the leadership of Dr. Robert Brown and the Massachusetts General Hospital, whose team is led by Drs. Merit Cudkowicz and James Berry and other dedicated researchers.
You can read about the most recent update on Dr. Brown's research by clicking here.
The Angel Fund's goal is to bring the research to human trials as quickly as possible.
This approach to silencing genes that cause nerve degeneration in the brain and spinal cord can potentially benefit other disorders, such as some forms of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's or Huntington's disease.
