A message from the Chair

James T. Glerum, Jr.

Chairman, Regional Banking North America,

Citigroup Inc.

Our model seems simple enough: civic-minded leaders come together to help government clients make change and solve big problems. As most of you know, however, Civic Consulting's work is incredibly broad and deep. Since I joined the board, I have been constantly surprised by just how much the organization accomplishes.

Who else goes from re-designing intake processes at a health clinic to staffing a task force to recommend a site for a new museum? Who else has the patience and focus to commit to long-term, ambitious projects like turning around an entire community college system or accelerating economic growth through tourism? And who else brings such diverse, talented groups of people to do this work: both internally (just look at the senior team, which includes a lawyer, a Navy pilot, and a banker) and externally (pro bono partners from law, higher education, finance, management consulting, real estate and more).

Most of all, I am impressed by the willingness of our corporate community to invest in our city. Over the past year, 41 companies worked with us to provide $15 million in services, and I am incredibly proud of the results:

  • Based on the success of recent tourism initiatives, Chicago raised its tourism goal to 55 million visitors by 2020
  • Cook County's subsidy to Cook County Health and Hospitals System has been reduced by $76 million (30%) for 2014, on top of a 50% reduction in the past two years
  • Graduation rates at City Colleges of Chicago have nearly doubled, from 7% to 13%, since the start of Reinvention, and are on track to double again
  • The City launched a strategy to triple the number of students prepared for jobs in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields by 2018
  • The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art Task Force developed a site recommendation, helping attract to Chicago a next-generation cultural icon which will bring $2 billion in economic impact to the region over 10 years

None of us could have done this alone. It is possible only with the extraordinary partnership that is Civic Consulting Alliance.

Thank you all for being a part, and congratulations on our many joint successes.

James T. Glerum, Jr.

Chairman, Civic Consulting Alliance

Telling our partnership's story

Pro bono partners:

To help celebrate our successes, and to brag a little bit about Chicago's public and private sectors working together to tackle big issues, Exelon Corporation and Stakeholder Strategies have been working pro bono to write three case studies detailing past successes:

The next time you want to tell someone about our work, consider sharing one of these case studies.
