QUOTE OF THE MONTH

"Be soft in your practice, think of the method as a fine silvery stream, not a raging waterfall. Follow the stream, have faith in its course. It will go on its way, meandering here, trickling there. It will find the grooves, the cracks, the crevices. Just follow it. Never let it out of your sight. It will take you there." Sheng Yen

FROM CRISTINA'S KITCHEN

Black beans are a fantastic way to work protein into a veggie-based diet.  In fact, a 1-cup serving of cooked black beans provides more than 15g of protein. For thousands of years, vegetarians all over the world have been getting ample amounts of protein by working legumes into their diet and completing the missing amino acids normally found in meats by combining their legume intake with whole grains such as rice, whole wheat breads etc. As well as a fantastic source of fiber (almost 60% of your daily value), black beans are rich with other nutrients, including 180mg of omega-3 fatty acids per cup in the form of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Black beans also contain an impressive array of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory phyto-nutrients, and there are numerous studies connecting black bean intake with reduced risk of certain cancers, such as liver, breast, and especially colon cancer. Black beans are a good source of antioxidant-promoting manganese, muscle-building protein, energy-producing magnesium, thiamin (vitamin B1), phosphorus and iron. Below, you'll find two quick and easy (not to mention delicious) ways to work black beans into your diet this winter.

Vegan Slow Cooker Black Bean Chili (medium spicy)

Black Bean Chili

serves 8

2 cups dried black beans (soaked 24-48 hours in 4 1/2 cups of water)

1 cup vegetable stock or water

1 large red onion, diced

1 green pepper, diced

1 red pepper, diced

1 bunch kale, stems removed, and torn into bite-sized pieces

1 6-oz can tomato paste

3 (approx. 14-oz sized) cans diced tomatoes

2 jalapenos, sliced (or more if you like spicy)

3 dried chiles de arbol

4-6 garlic cloves, crushed with the side of a knife

4 tbsp chili powder

2 tsp ground cumin

2 tsp smoked paprika

1 cinnamon stick

1-2 medium sized bay leaves

1 1/2 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp crushed red pepper (or more if you like spicy)

2 tsp kosher salt

2 tsp ground black pepper

minced fresh cilantro (optional)

Directions:

Combine all ingredients except kale in a 6qt or larger crock pot and cook on med-high for 8-10 hours. (Depending on the age of the dried beans it may take more or less time, usually no more than 10 hours.) DO NOT discard the water you soaked the beans in! Add it to the pot. During the last 30-60 minutes of cooking, stir in the kale. Serve hot on it's own or over steamed brown rice to make your meal a complete protein. I like to garnish with fat-free yogurt (not vegan) and massive amounts of cilantro!

Black Bean Hummus

makes about 2 cups

2 cups cooked black beans -or- 2 cans black beans (drained)

2 tbsp tahini (sesame seed paste)

1-2 cloves of garlic

1/8 tsp cumin

1 tsp chili powder

1 jalapeno (seeded)

pinch of cayenne (optional)

juice of 1/2-1 lime

4 tbsp fresh cilantro leaves

kosher salt to taste

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a food processor and blend until smooth. You may add olive oil or water to desired consistency. Note: hummus is always better the next day if you can wait that long!

Terra Yoga NewsletterDecember 2012

Greetings!

As 2012 comes to a close, I look back and find so many reasons to be thankful. It has definitely been a year of great change and transformation! Great change is always followed by great challenges -- that's how we learn, grow and blossom as human beings. However, there have been countless blessings as well.  As I often say to my students, impermanence is the nature of life. The only constant in life is change. Yet, many of us resist change. As Caroline Myss expertly puts it: "If we let go of things, our life is going to change. And the reality is that we are actually more afraid of change than we are of death." However, if we allow inevitable change to happen and go with the flow, we might just end up with something unexpectedly better than what we had before.

In the spring of 2012 we were ready to expand our horizons and embrace what we thought was the next step in our evolution as a yoga studio. As I announced in the May newsletter, we had big plans to move into a newer, bigger space. By the summer we had everything lined up: 2,800 square feet of space in a great location with ample parking, amazing plans drawn by an architect, backing from the City of Issaquah, and even the financial means to commit to such an endeavor. It seemed to be a done deal. Then, as the small details started to be determined, the situation started to shift and I realized that a move might not be in Terra Yoga's best interest after all.

What makes Terra Yoga a unique studio is our exceptional community.  I often hear from Terra yogis how peaceful, welcoming and cozy our environment is.  I realized in talking to some of you that Terra Yoga is not the actual physical space but the energy we've cultivated in that space for almost a decade.  A much larger studio would dissipate that energy and the ability for people to connect in more meaningful ways.  Yes, it would be nice to have showers... but the quality of instruction and the community aspect (the "gifts" or "content") are a lot more important than the amenities (the "packaging"). The unique gifts we offer differentiate Terra Yoga from other studios, not the nice but superficial packaging in which they are presented.  Managing a much larger space would also translate into considerably more administrative work for me -- my overhead would pretty much double -- when what really brings me joy is developing high-quality content to present to you.  Last year I promised myself I would reduce my work load and bring more balance to my life. How can I keep my commitment if I add more to my plate? The idea is to simplify life, not to complicate it -- and to continue to do what I love.

Furthermore, when I discussed with different contractors the optimal method for heating up the new studio efficiently (while staying within my budget), far infrared heat came up at the top of the list. Far infrared is considered  to be a cleaner and more economically viable option than other heating alternatives based on the (biased) safety studies produced by the companies that sell such products. It is no surprise that far infrared is a very popular choice among hot yoga studios at the moment. However, infrared heat is a form of radiation that hasn't been used for the purpose of heating larger spaces for long periods of time until very recently. Therefore, there haven't been any definitive studies on the long-term effects of recurrent exposure to infrared radiation for periods longer than 1-2 hours per day.  As with any other type of radiation, the effects can be cumulative if not enough time has passed between sessions.  As such, long-term exposure to a very low dosage may be equivalent to short-time exposure to a large dosage.  Both my physics background and my yogic intuition tell me that --until more serious, unbiased studies are done -- it is not wise to risk exposing students, teachers and myself to daily doses of infrared radiation. (Note: This is a complex topic that deserves a separate editorial. I have done a lot of research on infrared this year and will be sharing my findings with you soon.)

In the end, what we thought was the next step in our evolution as a yoga studio this year was not really a physical move but rather a shift towards more refined, higher-quality content. Here are just a few examples of the amazing programs we offered in 2012: Kirtan with Girish, Ayurveda workshops, Group Breathing Circles and 40-Day Challenge, to name just a few. We have expanded our horizons this year and will continue to do so as we transition into the next. We have definitely cleaned house and got rid of what wasn't working in order to raise the bar in terms of the yoga education we offer. In 2013, we will have our first-ever yoga retreat in Brazil (Peru is probably next), a better and improved 40-Day Challenge program, monthly Group Breathing Circles, and many more special events and workshops with gifted teachers. In January, we will even be introducing a new class style that you won't find anywhere else! 2013 promises to be an exciting new year, and we would love for you to be a part of it!

 Happy Holidays!

FALL / WINTER YOGA & AYURVEDA WORKSHOP
WITH BONNIE DIKE

Ayurveda

Date: Sunday, 12/9

Time: 1-3 p.m.

Cost: $35

The Fall/Winter Ayurveda and Yoga Workshop at Terra Yoga has been rescheduled for Sunday, December 9. The emphasis will be on keeping you warm, grounded, nourished and joyful during the fall/winter season.

You must pre-register online by December 6 (due to the need to plan recipe amounts and informational hand-outs).

"The foundation of yoga should be ayurveda and the fruit of ayurveda should be yoga." ~Dr. Vasant Lad

Ayurveda, yoga's sister science and India's oldest system of medicine, is the art of living a healthy and balanced life by connecting with the seasons and the healing power of nature.

As autumn and winter arrive in all their splendor, unique challenges present themselves. The cool and dry characteristics of fall/winter are connected to the elements of air and space. The aspects of Vata dosha become prevalent, bringing out our creative and alert sides. However, when Vata is out of balance, we may feel restless, flighty, anxious and full of worry. Chapped lips, dry skin, constipation and colds are physical ailments caused by a disconnect with nature in fall/winter.

Ayurveda offers an array of helpful lifestyle and health tips for the colder months, including suggestions for warming and grounding foods, herbs, teas, daily rituals, clothing, music, aromatherapy and yoga and exercise.

We will begin the workshop with a yoga sequence created to bring balance in preparation for fall and winter. This practice will create a slower internal rhythm, allowing you the opportunity to turn inward while staying centered and grounded. When practiced regularly, a fall/winter ayurvedic yoga practice will also keep your immune system healthy throughout the colder months.

Next, we will take a simple and fun dosha quiz to help identify your constitution. Ayurvedic recipes and rituals will be shared to help you learn how to live in optimal health. Finally, we will sample delicious local produce in a deeply satisfying kicharee, India's favorite comfort food, and sip a healing and healthful cold weather tea.

Luxuriate into fall and winter by embracing the ancient secrets of ayurveda!
