Terra Yoga NewsletterOctober 2012

Greetings!

The weather is changing and it's finally beginning to feel like Fall. According to Ayurveda, the sister science to yoga, Fall is a transitional Vata season. Vata is a combination of the natural elements Air and Space, denoting rhythmic intelligent movement.

Space (Akasha) is expansion in all directions with no resistance. Space is related to the sense of sound. Whenever there is sound, space is present.

Air (Vayu) creates unidirectional movement. Air is an important aspect of everything in life as it deals with all the movements or rhythms of life. Air is associated with the sense of touch. You feel touch through constant movement.

Vata governs movement in the body, the activities of the nervous system and the process of elimination. When Vata is in balance, you will be lively and enthusiastic, with a lean body and an energetic and creative mind. When Vata becomes imbalanced, it manifests in the body as constipation, hypertension, arthritis, weakness, restlessness, excessively dry skin, and digestive challenges.

As the seasons change, it is important to modify our Yoga practice to prevent imbalances. Because of the Vata nature of Fall, you will be seeing more warming, grounding and stabilizing sequences in many of the classes offered at Terra Yoga this season. As we do every year, we will also be preparing the room for the seasonal changes by:

- covering the windows with an insulating film to prevent the cold from coming in;

- adjusting the thermostat to warmer temperatures;

- adding a humidifier to the room to counterbalance the drying effects associated with Vata imbalances.

You can expect these changes to happen gradually within the next 5 to 7 days.

In addition to adapting our Yoga practice to the Vata season, it is important to change our eating patterns to include warming and grounding foods. Check out below for the delicious Chickpeas in a Spicy Goan Curry recipe from Cristina Gildee's kitchen, beloved Terra Yoga teacher and fantastic vegan chef. In her article, Cristina also talks about the many benefits of turmeric -- one of my favorite spices. Turmeric is almost tridoshic, meaning it is useful for people of all three constitutional types (Kapha, Vata and Pitta) as defined in Ayurveda. Turmeric is believed to be a stimulating, warming herb that can help to reduce Kapha and bring Vata and Pitta back up to healthy levels.

If you're interested in learning more about Ayurveda, the three doshas (or body types), and the Fall/Vata season, Bonnie Dike -- another beloved Terra Yoga teacher and Ayurveda expert -- will be offering her Fall Yoga & Ayurveda Workshop on Sunday, October 28th. Check out the workshop section below for more information and to register online.

We look forward to practicing with you this season. The room will be toasty and the classes will be taught by our highly-skilled teachers, who will take your Fall yoga experience to the next level. Come sweat and stay warm with us!

Namasté!

FALL YOGA & AYURVEDA WORKSHOP with Bonnie Dike

Ayurveda

Date: Sunday, 10/28

Time: 1-3 p.m.

Cost: $30 ($35 day of)

Terra Yoga is pleased to offer a Fall Yoga and Ayurveda Workshop with an emphasis on keeping you warm, grounded, nourished and joyful during the fall/winter season.

"The foundation of yoga should be ayurveda and the fruit of ayurveda should be yoga." ~Dr. Vasant Lad

Ayurveda, yoga's sister science and India's oldest system of medicine, is the science of living a healthy and balanced life by connecting with the seasons and the healing power of nature.

As autumn arrives in all of its splendor, unique challenges present themselves. Autumn's cool and dry characteristics are connected to the elements of air and space. The aspects of Vata dosha become prevalent, bringing out our creative and alert sides. However, when Vata is out of balance, we may feel restless, flighty, anxious and full of worry. Chapped lips, dry skin, constipation and colds are physical ailments caused by a disconnect with nature in fall/winter.

Ayurveda offers an array of helpful lifestyle and health tips for autumn, including suggestions for warming and grounding foods, herbs, teas, daily rituals, clothing, music, aromatherapy, yoga, and exercise.

We will begin the workshop with a yoga sequence created to bring balance in preparation for fall. This practice will create a slower internal rhythm, allowing you the opportunity to turn inward while staying centered and grounded. When practiced regularly, a fall ayurvedic yoga practice will also keep your immune system healthy throughout the colder months.

Following our yoga practice, we will take a short and fun quiz to help you find your dosha. Ayurvedic recipes and rituals will be shared to help you learn how to live in optimal health. Finally, we will sample delicious local produce in a deeply satisfying kicharee, India's favorite comfort food, and sip a healing and healthful autumn tea.

Luxuriate into fall by embracing the ancient secrets of ayurveda!

FROM CRISTINA GILDEE'S KITCHEN:  Spotlight on Turmeric- the spice that could help save your life

TurmericThe active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. Turmeric has been used for over 2500 years in India, where it was most likely first used as a dye.

Long known for its anti-inflammatory properties, recent research has revealed that turmeric is a natural wonder, proving beneficial in the treatment of many different health conditions from cuts and burns to Alzheimer's disease.

Top 5 reasons you should add more turmeric to your diet:

1. It is a potent natural anti-inflammatory that works as well as many anti-inflammatory drugs but without the side effects.

2. Slows, and in some cases, prevents the spread of many different types of cancer, including cancer of the brain, prostate, liver, breasts, reproductive organs, lungs, colon etc.

3. Reduces the risk of childhood leukemia.

4. Is a natural liver detoxifier.

5. May prevent and slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease by removing amyloyd plaque buildup in the brain.

Here's a delicious recipe to help you add more turmeric to your diet. This is by far my favorite high protein, low fat, comfort food. The turmeric really helps my joints recover from too much running around (or standing on my feet all day at work). Enjoy!

Chickpeas in a Spicy Goan Curry

Serves 4

Ingredients
  • 1 cup dried chickpeas, soaked overnight (OR 2 15oz cans, drained)
  • 1 Tbsp canola oil
  • 1 large red onion, minced
  • 1/2 tsp grated fresh ginger
  • 2 small to medium sized tomatoes, minced
  • 1 tsp ground coriander seeds
  • 1.5 Tbsp minced garlic cloves
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne (1/4 tsp if you don't like spicy)
  • 3/4 tsp cumin
  • 1 cup water (see note)
  • 2 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika (may substitute plain paprika)
  • 1 13.5oz can lite coconut milk
  • 2 Tbsp minced cilantro leaves
Note: For canned chickpeas: use 1 cup of water, 1/2 cup for thicker curry. For dried chickpeas: use 1 -1 1/2 cups of water, adding more as needed during simmer time.

Prep: combine all dry spices and fresh ginger in a small bowl and set aside.

Directions
1. In a large sauce pan, sauté onion in oil over medium-high heat for 8 minutes or until well caramelized.

2. Add ginger-spice mixture and stir for two minutes or until spices become fragrant.

3. Add garlic and tomatoes and stir until the tomato begins to break down.

4. Add chickpeas and stir to coat.

5. Add water, bring to a boil, cover, and simmer until chickpeas are cooked through, 30 minutes for canned peas or 45 minutes if using dried.

6. Add coconut milk and simmer uncovered 10 more minutes.

7. Stir in minced cilantro and simmer 2 more minutes.

8. Remove from heat and serve hot on a bed of brown basmati rice or as a thick soup with crusty whole wheat bread. Garnish with cilantro and smoked paprika.
