A Thanksgiving Reflection: Paying it Forward at Saint Mary Academy
By Karen Widener, Fourth-Grade Teacher

It all started on a typical Friday morning with a coffee treat at Starbucks on my way to school. If the week had been overly challenging, I would splurge with a venti (large) cup. It's a regular treat at the end of the week.
Karen Widener
As I ordered my large coffee at the drive-through window, I counted out my cash and was ready to pass it on to the clerk. When I approached the window, I was told that the lady in front of me had just paid for my coffee. She passed a simple message to me, "Have a great Friday!"

This act came as a very nice surprise, and as I drove away, I thought about the stranger, the kindness, the message, and the big heart of the unknown. The stranger had just made my day and put a big smile on my face: how powerful!

Upon arriving at school, I told my students about the special kindness that was given to me in the wee hours of that Friday morning. It's the little things, I told them.

Although I don't usually give weekend homework, on this Friday I felt the need and gave them the assignment to make someone's day over the weekend. We talked about examples of kindness that could be shared. It's the little things, I kept reminding them.
Great Start for 2012 Catholic Services Appeal

The 2012 Catholic Services Appeal has raised nearly $1,800,000 in gifts and pledges in just the first six weeks of this year's drive. That's 65% of this year's goal of $2,750,000.

Gifts to the Appeal help to fund more than 100 ministries and programs designed to serve the needs of thousands of individuals and families as well as our parishes and schools. This work includes programs offered by archdiocesan agencies such as Catholic Charities, the Vocations Office, Family Ministries, Lifelong Education and Formation, and more.

Help support the work that brings Christ to others every day.

A Family Prayer Service for Thanksgiving

(Alternate reading verses among those present.)

Reader: A reading from the Book of Psalms:
               Psalm 65: A Psalm of Thanksgiving
Praise is due to you
in Zion, O God.

Reader: Blessed is he whom you choose and call
to dwell in your courts.
We are filled with the good things of your house,
of your holy temple.

Reader: You visit the earth, give it water;
you fill it with riches.
God's ever-flowing river brims over
to prepare the grain.

Reader: You crown the year with your bounty.
Abundance flows in your pathways;
in pastures of the desert it flows.

Reader: The hills are girded with you,
the meadows clothed with flocks.
The valleys are decked with wheat.
They shout for joy; yes, they sing!

As an option, each family member may express gratitude for something or someone for which he or she is personally grateful before saying together:

All: Father, all-powerful,
your gifts of love are countless
and your goodness infinite;
as we come before you on Thanksgiving Day
with gratitude for your kindness,
open our hearts to have concern
for every man, woman, and child,
so that we may share your gifts in loving service.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time - True Generosity

"Jesus sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, 'Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood'" (Mark 12:41-44).

The selfless widow exemplifies humility, discretion, and generosity, which are all part of authentic discipleship. Her gift represented everything she had. It was not given from her surplus but rather from her need. Read more...
