Quality Matters
Kathy Keairns

Hello!,

We are very excited that online course offerings are continuing to expand at DU and are delighted that so many of our TOW graduates continue to teach online. This summer we are offering almost 100 fully online courses to our  undergraduate students!  If you are thinking about trying something new in your online course, please check out the OTL's "OneNewThing" mini grant. Read on to learn more about this and other updates and resources available to support online education at DU.

Online Course Reviews

We've updated our internal DU Quality Matters review form to reflect the most recent Quality Matters standards. Quality Matters (QM) is a leader in quality assurance for online education and is based on research-supported and published bests practices. The QM rubric is a set of standards by which to evaluate the design of online and hybrid courses. As QM subscribers, we have access to the proprietary rubric and discounts on Quality Matters professional development workshops.

Please contact Kathy Keairns if you would like to try out the new rubric to do a self-review of your online course or if you would like us to do a peer review. Please also contact Kathy if you are interested in learning more about QM workshops.

Manage your TechSmith Relay Recordings with Wrangler

Relay Wrangler is an application built by the Office of Teaching and Learning to allow you to manage your own Tech Smith/Camtasia Relay recordings. Using this system, you can mark presentations for preservation, download your video files for use in other systems, or even delete your un-needed recordings. You can also retrieve the existing presentation link for any recordings to share within Canvas or other teaching and learning tools.

Visit this page for a quick video overview of these main features.

OneNewThing Mini Grants
Are you thinking about trying out a new technology or teaching strategy in your online course? If so, the OTL would like to help you implement "OneNewThing" in your course and also pay you a small stipend for your efforts. Please contact us to share your one new idea and we will work with you to make it happen. And if you don't have any specific ideas at this time, we have lots of ideas and are happy to help you explore ways to make your online class even better!

Canvas Discussion Tips
Are you struggling to navigate discussions in Canvas?  One tip that may help is to set your individual discussion settings to "manually mark posts as read" to allow you to flag posts. This setting enables you to control the read/unread status of each post.  Marking a post as "Unread" allows you to identify posts that require further attention.  Visit 4 Tips for Managing Discussions in Canvas article for more information.
Canvas Open Labs

The Office of Teaching & Learning will be holding Canvas Open Labs from 1:00-4:00 pm on Tuesday May 19th, Wednesday May 27th, and Monday June 1st in the OTL Conference Room 345 on the upper floor of Anderson Academic Commons. Take advantage of these sessions if you are still using Blackboard because time is running out!

Please make sure to back-up all materials still in Blackboard that you don't already have saved to your computer or other device. While Blackboard will be available until June 20th, we recommend backing up all of your materials by June 1st in case you experience issues or have questions.

Creating Instructional Videos
If you missed Aaron Dewald's presentation and workshop about creating Alex Martinez effective videos for your class, you can find the recording on our blog.  Please reach out to our own video guru, Alex Martinez, if you would like help
creating videos or video assignments for your course.

Resources for Online Students
Tips and Resources for Online Learners - Share these resources with your students before your course begins.

Online Student Readiness Assessment - Ask your students to take this assessment in preparation for taking your online class

DU Canvas Student Orientation - Include a link to the orientation within the Getting Started area of your online course.

Canvas 24/7 Support -

One of the wonderful things about Canvas is that they provide 24/7 support to faculty, staff and students. Encourage your students to contact Canvas directly if they have questions about Canvas.

Consider adding links to the Canvas guides specific to your online course within the Getting Started area of your Canvas course.  For example:

How do I add a profile picture to Canvas?

How do I submit an online assignment?

How do I log in to the Canvas app on my iPhone?

That's all for now. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Kathy Keairns
