Impact of Family Violence Conference: A South Asian Perspective
| |
The Social Services Network and partners are proud to present the Fourth annual conference, " Impact of family violence: a South Asian perspective" on May 14th & 15th in Durham Region. Hosted by the Durham Regional Police. Partner abuse is a serious and globally prevalent public health issue. In 2006, Statistics Canada reported that there were over 38,000 incidents of family violence reported to the police all across Canada. While violence against women impacts all sectors of the community, female, child victims and seniors who are recent immigrants and/or of low-income status are more likely to suffer more severe and prolonged abuse in their relationships. There is a need to break the cycle of family violence within the South Asian community in the Greater Toronto Area by bringing about multi-level change - within individuals, the communities and the institutional system. When: Wednesday, May 14, 2014 & Thursday, May 15, 2014 Where: University of Ontario Institue of Technology & Durham College Time: 8am to 5pm (both days) Tickets: Early Bird $100 (before April 15) | Regular $130

- Inform the public of all services and programs including community programs (Government and NGO's) that currently support family violence

Preparing for the launch of "Express Entry"
Canada's Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander today announced new measures in key economic immigration programs to prepare for next year's launch of Express Entry, Canada's new active recruitment model. Express Entry will lead to a faster and more flexible economic immigration system that will address Canada's economic and labour market needs.
To prepare for the launch of Express Entry in 2015, Citizenship and Immigration Canada will begin accepting applications under new caps for the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) and Canadian Experience Class (CEC), starting May 1, 2014. These measures will ensure a steady supply of skilled workers who are settling in Canada permanently and helping to supplement the Canadian workforce in areas where there are skills shortages.
