Happy New Year and welcome to 2014's first west coast edition of the MyBindi newsletter.
The start of a new year means setting resolutions for most. But, if you're a bride to be, it's also a time to start hitting the wedding show circuit.
If you haven't seen it already, there's still time to check out 'A Chorus of Lungs', a 3D interactive sound and video installation that explores the idea of the social body, its voice and breath.
If you have an event or initiative that you would like to promote, please reach out to us via email We'd love to hear from you.
There's a lot that the West Coast desis can teach the rest of Canada.
I am sure Toronto's mayor could use a few lessons from the Nenshi playbook!

'A Chorus of Lungs' An Art Installation at Centre A
|
|
' A Chorus of Lungs' by Leila Sujir and Maria Lantin, is a 3D interactive sound and video installation that explores the idea of the social body, its voice and breath. The installation appears as a constellation of animated lungs floating in space to the cadence of breathing. The viewer is invited to animate the Chorus of Lungs by pushing their hands together, or pulling their hands apart, actions which compress or create a space for the lungs to become a chorus both visually and audibly. The work addresses ideas of the individual and society, and within the consideration of Asian identities, reflects on approaches to individual difference and diversity, social engagement, interaction, shared space and ideas of collectivity. When: On now until Saturday, January 25, 2014
Where: Centre A
Time: Tuesday - Saturdays, 11am - 6pm
Tickets: This is a FREE event

Lunch & Learn: South Asian Women on Domestic Violence
| |
Domestic Violence: Narratives of South Asian Immigrant Women & Reflections of the Qualitative Research Process
Presented by: Ethno-cultural Family Violence Committee (EFVC) | PhD student: Wendy Aujla
This presentation explores the problem of domestic violence by giving voice to a sample of South Asian immigrant women who are not only often ignored by their own community or society, but also fearful to reveal what challenges they experience in a new foreign residence when reaching out for help.
Domestic violence is often framed solely as a cultural and marginal problem within our society, despite its far-reaching impact on women from all racial backgrounds. Developing awareness for those affected necessitates reaching common ground on our thinking about abuse in ethno-cultural communities and how society can respond to this problem.
When: Wednesday, January 29, 2014
Where: Assist Community Services Centre (9649 - 105 A Avenue - Edmonton)
Time: 11:30am - 1:30pm
Tickets: $3.00 to be paid at the door
Please register by Friday, January 24, 2014 as space is limited. Light lunch will be served. Parking is available on the street.
