10 Places to See Before They're GonePlaces, much like animals can become endangered, and some of the world's most amazing sights are gradually disappearing. Scientists contend that climate change is affecting oceans, reefs, beaches, and even cities, leading to potentially drastic changes. Development is another danger for once-pristine, off-the-beaten-path spots and their unique cultures. Click HERE to read more.
'Tis the Season to ReuniteThe holidays are right around the corner and even if you don't celebrate, the days off from work are still great for catching up with old friends and family. Just the other day, I was going through my twitter and I happened to come across this cute video that Google India has put together. And although it's about how amazing Google is (it is pretty damn amazing!) the video shows two elderly South Asian men & they're heartfelt reunion after the 1947 India-Pakistan partition. Book Review: The Hungry Ghosts"In Sri Lankan myth, a person is reborn as a peréthaya because, during his human life, he desired too much.... The peréthayas that appear to us are always our ancestors, and it is our duty to free them from their suffering ..."
This myth is the primary leitmotif in Shyam Selvadurai's long-awaited third novel for adults, which is also chock full of more contemporary themes: the immigrant experience, feminism, race and politics, the struggle to belong, and the concept of home. But it is the Scheherazadian stories interspersed throughout (and related by Shivan, a gay man in his thirties), that offer the main metaphoric resonance.

How to start giving your child an allowanceIn Margaret Johnson's view, kids are woefully uneducated about money. "I once asked a group of school-aged children where money came from. One little girl said, 'From the machine,' and when I asked what happened when the machine ran out, she replied, 'You just go to another machine.'" Her advice to counter this attitude? "In order to learn about money, kids need to have some of their own. An allowance is a great way to do this," says Johnson, who in addition to being president and CEO of Solutions Credit Counselling in Surrey, BC, volunteers her time teaching elementary school students about money. Today I realized that I am a sucker for obligation. I didn't recognize or 'see' it clearly until now. Meaning, there are a good handful of things I do and people I have in my life that are there purely out of obligation.
Sometimes we do things because its 'the right thing to do' - ie. your friend is in need eventhough its not reciprocated, or you want to voice your opinion but oh, you don't want to be rude/disprespectful, or that person did something huge for you in the past so you must take the punch, so to speak.
While these are all valid reasons to 'be obliged' and keep certain relationships - the question I asked myself today is... where am "I" in all this 'should'ing??' 'I should be nice, I should ignore the self-centredness of that person, I should suck it up and be there for that person'. You get the picture. Or what seems to be my personal favourite - 'well, they did X for me, I owe them...' Click HERE to read more.
