 Book Review: The Hungry Ghosts

"In Sri Lankan myth, a person is reborn as a peréthaya because, during his human life, he desired too much.... The peréthayas that appear to us are always our ancestors, and it is our duty to free them from their suffering ..."

This myth is the primary leitmotif in Shyam Selvadurai's long-awaited third novel for adults, which is also chock full of more contemporary themes: the immigrant experience, feminism, race and politics, the struggle to belong, and the concept of home. But it is the Scheherazadian stories interspersed throughout (and related by Shivan, a gay man in his thirties), that offer the main metaphoric resonance.

The novel begins the day before Shivan is to return to war-torn Sri Lanka to accompany his infirm, estranged grandmother to Toronto. As he prepares, Shivan reflects on his turbulent upbringing and on the odious act she instigated when he visited her as a young man. The earlier tragedy changed his life, and Shivan now finds himself unsatisfied and confrontational.

Indo-Canadian Composer Vikas Kohli of FatLabs works with Metis/Algonquin Director Michelle Latimer on documentary film following Canadian Hip-Hop artists

Award-winning Indo-Canadian composer Vikas Kohli of FatLabs worked with director Michelle Latimer of Metis/Algonquin heritage on the feature documentary "a.k.a. ALIAS"

The artistic and gritty film looks directly at the lives of Toronto rappers, who've sprung from 'hoods that have turned into angry "territories." There she found stories that belied the stereotypes, young rappers using the form as an alternative to drugs  and gang life, and as a possible escape. And their expression - while a stark and realistic portrait of Canada's growing underclass - is anything but an endorsement of thug life.

Practical Parenting

How to start giving your child an allowance

In Margaret Johnson's view, kids are woefully uneducated about money. "I once asked a group of school-aged children where money came from. One little girl said, 'From the machine,' and when I asked what happened when the machine ran out, she replied, 'You just go to another machine.'"

Her advice to counter this attitude? "In order to learn about money, kids need to have some of their own. An allowance is a great way to do this," says Johnson, who in addition to being president and CEO of Solutions Credit Counselling in Surrey, BC, volunteers her time teaching elementary school students about money.

Wellness Works

There are many essential vitamins, mineral and nutrients that we need to live healthy and optimally. Hopefully and ideally, we would obtain these through whole foods and as needed, through supplementation. For women in particular, our needs differ due to hormonal changes through the lifespan. I recently came across this wonderful graphic that shows the top 6 vitamins for women and their whole food source - this is a great resource when grocery shopping! Of course fruits and vegetables should be the bulk of your shopping trip, in addition to whole grains, lean proteins and low-fat dairy as needed.
