Editorial

Welcome to another edition of MyBindi's newsletter!

Congratulations to Parminder Singh
who has won the box of Turkish Delights and Baklava!

I also have some good news (mostly for myself but also for many of you).  Do you recall how upset I was to miss TAJ  - the epic love story featuring Lisa Ray and Kabir Bedi which I missed at the Living Arts Centre?  Well, guess what?  TAJ returns to the Flato Markham Theatre on Friday, November 1.  So, if like me you missed it, here's your chance!  I will be there.  Get your tickets now and you can be there too :)

If you're still not convinced then check out the TAJ Preview Event which is FREE to attend on Monday, October 28 where you can learn more about this spectacular production.

And finally, MyBindi is giving away tickets to the Reel Asian International Film Festival.  This year's line up features South Asian films such as Bombay Talkies, Without Shepherds and Farah goes Bang!  See below for details on how to get tickets for you and a friend to enjoy a film courtesy of MyBindi.com.

Lastly, I would like to make a personal appeal to you all to help a young Canadian filmmaker to bring her film Dowry to the screen!  This film is worthy of TIFF and is currently in post production.  Please support the kickstarter campaign (with as little as $10 to show your support) and feel the joy knowing that you've contributed to start a meaningful discussion on a very relevant topic.

Until next week!

Regards,

Syerah

Are You Benefitting From Your Benefits?

With two months left in the year, this is the time that us practitioners get extra busy. That's because many people realize they still have health benefits to use from their extended benefits plan and come in more freqeuently to take advantage of them. In fact, 'The Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association estimates over 23 million people, or 67 per cent of the population have extended health care benefits, which includes not-for-profit health insurance benefit providers.' as reported in a recent article by CBC.

Its a win-win situation - but employee benefits are only used by a small percentage of employees in Canada. In fact, in the article it went on to say that Great-West Life Assurance Company completed a 10-year review of trends in health and dental claims. Not surprsingly, a very small percentage of people are utilizing their paramedical benefits - ie. chiropractic, massage, acupuncture - the very services that can lead to greater quality of life, decreased pain and most certainly wellness & prevention.

There are also several other ingredients in this classic tea that not only add warmth but also serve as remedies to cure indigestion and breathing & blood circulation issues.

Salimah My Body My Temple

I answered the phone one morning last December. The voice on the other side said, "Can you help me please angel? I'm dying and I know nothing at all about filling out paperwork for that."

There was something about his voice that was loving and sincere and calm. He had the voice of a teacher, a friend, someone you would miss when they were gone. Over the next 9 months John and I had a number of phone calls. After each conversation, I would sit for moment and reflect.  What he left me with were life lessons - ideas that I would like to share with you today so that you can have the benefit of his generosity.

Everyone Matters
John never called me by name - he always said, "You are my angel.  You are here to help me."   It made me smile. And it made me want to help him.   After a few conversations I was pretty sure that he called everyone his angel. His Power of Attorney, his doctors, his life insurance agent - we were all his angels. He knew he needed us.  And he treated us all like we mattered to him personally. I know we all did our best for him - not just because we were experts - but because he set the bar really high. From his example I learned that being aware and appreciative of others - brings out the best in everyone. Myself included.

Blending Your Life with a New Partner
Big Blended Family
Your kids, career and home may all be in place but are you ready to open it all up to a serious partner?

Whether you're recently out of a relationship, separated or divorced BindiDates is a great place to start if you want to re-enter the dating life.

For many, the dream of falling in love, getting married, getting a house and having kids is picturesque. But for many life happened and things took a turn for the unexpected.

When you've already been through a marriage, kid(s), and have organized a life for yourself with home and career, and then find yourself suddenly single - there is initially some anxiety as you figure out what it is that you want from a relationship. You also realize that things aren't quite so simple anymore.

You start dating again - tentatively, at first but you navigate yourself through these uncharted territories. Dating itself is not so daunting. You meet people to see if there's anyone out there with whom you share chemistry/compatibility. You're in the very early stages of the "I'm getting to know you" phase and, in the process, sometimes, you even get to know your own self.

But, there comes a time when you will meet someone that you consider compatible. It's possible that he may be at a similar place in his life. And it starts feeling right. You spend time together. You share stories about your kids and your families. You feel good together and you want to spend more time together. Indeed, you don't want to see other people because you really want to explore if there's a future that you might possibly share with this individual.

On the one hand you are buoyed by this emotion. It's a happy, euphoric state. But, in tandem, you also you start having panic attacks. Making the jump from "dating" someone to "being in a relationship" with someone - where you're holding yourself out as a couple, meeting each other's friends and family - is more than just a leap of faith. The second time around, somehow, you want to be sure that this is the real thing.

What if it's not the right person? What if it's not the right time? What if your kid hates him? What if his kids hate me? What if his idea of raising kids is very different from mine? How would things work? What about our friends? Extended families? Will they like him? Will they like me?

As a parent, you want to shield your child from any situation that will cause an emotional upheaval. Introducing a new person in your life - to their life - is a huge step and it's not something you want to be doing every few months. So you wait, until you think you know for sure.

But, you realise, that much of that "knowing for sure" exercise entails an interaction between this person and your friends and your family. You already know that you're good together - in isolation - each with the other. You now need to observe how you function together as a couple with other persons, and how each of you interacts and integrates in the life that other has built so far.

Ultimately, all you can do is trust your instincts in picking the partner, trust that if things don't go as planned, your child will still be resilient in absorbing the situation - and do the best you can.

You soon realize that just because you're older and just because you've been married once and just because you've established a life and a career in these past few years - does not mean that you can find guarantees when it comes to relationships.

It's still really quite a simple dream albeit with a few modifications :)
