Editorial

Greetings from Vienna and Welcome to another edition of MyBindi's newsletter!

As excited I am about being in Vienna (and continuing on to Turkey tomorrow) there are always some regrets about leaving Toronto.

This time, I am so disappointed that I will miss an opportunity to see TAJ yet again.  This epic love story featuring Lisa Ray and Kabir Bedi was performed to sold out audiences at Luminato in 2011.  I missed it then.  It's coming back to GTA for one night only on October 19 at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga and I will miss it again.

I hope you're not going to miss this chance though.  You can read what Lisa Ray and Kabir Bedi have to say about their experience with TAJ to MyBindi's Habiba Ahmad.

I'm also disappointed that I will miss the Raas and Garba events celebrated all over the city and the incredible "Souled Out" art exhibition at the spectacular House of Moments.

Details for all of these events are below.  I hope you will be there and will share your feedback with us on our Facebook Page.

Health Benefits of Indian Masala Chai

Masala chai is a flavored tea beverage made by brewing black tea with a mixture of aromatic Indian spices and herbs.

The ancient medicinal ingredient in chai is 'sattvic', which acts as a revitalizing agent that helps to sooth the mind & soul. There are also several other ingredients in this classic tea that not only add warmth but also serve as remedies to cure indigestion and breathing & blood circulation issues. During flu season, many of the antimicrobial qualities are often used to fight against a sore throat & cough.

Salimah My Body My Temple

I answered the phone one morning last December. The voice on the other side said, "Can you help me please angel? I'm dying and I know nothing at all about filling out paperwork for that."

There was something about his voice that was loving and sincere and calm. He had the voice of a teacher, a friend, someone you would miss when they were gone. Over the next 9 months John and I had a number of phone calls. After each conversation, I would sit for moment and reflect. What he left me with were life lessons - ideas that I would like to share with you today so that you can have the benefit of his generosity.

Everyone Matters
John never called me by name - he always said, "You are my angel.  You are here to help me."   It made me smile. And it made me want to help him.   After a few conversations I was pretty sure that he called everyone his angel. His Power of Attorney, his doctors, his life insurance agent - we were all his angels. He knew he needed us.  And he treated us all like we mattered to him personally. I know we all did our best for him - not just because we were experts - but because he set the bar really high. From his example I learned that being aware and appreciative of others - brings out the best in everyone. Myself included.

Interview :: Lata Pada & Lisa Ray on the dance-drama TAJ
Lata Lisa TAJ Interview

Sampradaya Dance Creations presents John Murrell's TAJ on October 19th at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga.

The dance-drama is presented by Founder, Director, and Principal Teacher of SAMPRADAYA Dance Academy, Lata Pada and also stars Bollywood actor Kabir Bedi alongside Canadian actress Lisa Ray. The play follows Jahan Ara (Lisa Ray), the daughter of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan (Kabir Bedi) and brings to life the historic story behind the Taj Mahal.

MyBindi's Habiba Ahmad caught up with Lata Pada & Lisa Ray to discuss what it was like working on this epic story in TAJ.

Lata Pada - In a past statement, you have referred to TAJ as your 'dream project'. What is it about this production that is such an aspiration for you?
TAJ has been a project that I have been dreaming of and visioning since 2009. Around that time, I was reading several books on Mughal history at that time and I was fascinated by Indu Sundaresan's book - The Shadow Princess. Jahanara, the indomitable daughter of Emperor Shah Jahan is the protagonist in this book. She lives her life amidst royal splendor and court intrigue in the historical backdrop of the love story of her parents which led to the creation of this architectural masterpiece.

When I proposed it to Janice Price, CEO of the Luminato Festival, her response was positive and enthusiastic and that conversation led to Luminato Festival commissioning TAJ for their 2011 festival. Such an opportunity comes but rarely and it put the wind in our sails!

For me, TAJ is a dream project as it truly epitomizes a Canada-India collaboration bringing the best of Canadian and Indian artists and designers in a production that is unprecdented in theme, scale and talent. Written by Canada's Governor General's award winning playwright, John Murrell, directed by award winning director- Tom Diamond, I have a dream team of actors Kabir Bedi and Lisa Ray who have given so generously and wholeheartedly to this creation. Enhancing the production is a stunning ensemble of eleven dancers, and stellar creative team of choreographer- Padmubhushan Kumudini Lakhia, Composer- Praveen Rao, Set and Lighting Designer - Phillip Silver, Projection Design - Jacques Collin, Costume Designer - Rashmi Varma.
