Money Lessons: Undergrads say Their Budgets Did Not Make the Grade
TD Freshman Article

Student debt can quickly escalate in a number of different ways, like dipping into the semester's food budget for a Spring Break vacation or withdrawing cash from a credit card to pay the rent.

According to research from TD Canada Trust, 38% of undergraduate students wished they had stuck to a budget during school, and 43% said they wished they had curbed spending on discretionary items like nights out with friends, gadgets and coffee. Quick-fix approaches to spending can have implications that linger for decades, so it is essential that freshman put their best financial foot forward from day one.

"University is full of tempting opportunities to spend money, which is why it is so important for students to create a budget and learn when and how to say 'no' to things they cannot afford," said Raymond Chun, a senior vice president at TD Canada Trust. "With the average cost of an undergraduate degree currently estimated at $84,000, it is imperative that students do their homework on how to manage everyday finances, stretch their student dollars and avoid excessive debt."

To help post-secondary students make the grade in money management, Chun provides advice on how to avoid the top three freshman fiscal missteps:

1. Earning a failing mark on a credit rating
2. Treating a credit card like a debit card
3. Spending without a plan

Canada welcomes first immigrants under new Federal Skilled Trades Program
Skilled Worker Program

Canada's Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander officially welcomed one of the first permanent residents under the new Federal Skilled Trades Program: Eric Byrne, originally from Ireland.

"Our Government remains focused on job creation, economic growth and long-term prosperity," said Alexander. "The new Federal Skilled Trades Program enables us to attract and retain skilled workers-like Eric-so we can address regional labour shortages and strengthen Canada's economy. It gives me great pleasure to personally welcome one of Canada's first successful immigrants through our Skilled Trades stream."

Eric Byrne received his Ontario trades certificate of qualification in May 2012 and currently works as a plumber for University Plumbing and Heating. He first arrived in Canada through the International Experience Canada program, which provides opportunities for international youth between the ages of 18 and 35 to travel and work in Canada.

Automate your finances to focus on your long-term goals
Automate your finances

Managing money is easier said than done. It is like cleaning your closet every week for the rest of your life. Wouldn't it be nice to have an automated system that takes care of everything while you rest? Would you be surprised if I tell you there is such an automated system that never misses the deadline?

Do more with less time

Some people seem to have a magical ability to manage their money. They opened their RRSP and TFSAs years ago, and they seem to always know how much money they have and have more money to spend.

Automate your finances

We also can become better at managing our money and have more time at our disposal when we have an automated system working for us. When you automate your system, when your paycheque arrives, each dollar will be directed to the right account without you even doing a thing.

Inspired leadership: 5 ways to engage others
Inspired Leaders

Many seem to find it difficult to define what it means to lead in the workplace. Is it because there are so few role models ... especially for immigrants who are looking for examples of people who have gone through similar experiences as them?

Leadership in Canada starts with effective communication skills. Want to learn to become a leader? Here are five basic principles that, when applied, will inspire others to be more, do more and achieve more.

Create an environment that gives others a voice

Get curious to know what others think, feel and want to say. Check in regularly with your colleagues, using whatever medium is available. Encourage others to voice their opinions in a respectful way and be constructive.

Facilitate a dialogue that empowers others to think for themselves

Not everyone knows how to think independently. Practice asking good questions to get the brain focused. Avoid using "Why ...?" questions too often, as the response can be defensive.

Shamira Wellness
Home is Where You Are... Thanks Geneen!

I love reading. Most of it is non-fiction (if not all) and fall under the categories of: Health/Wellness, Spirituality and Self-Help. Love it - I could read all day about this! In particular, I absolutely love Geneen Roth. She has written numerous books - one of which I've blogged about before: Women, Food & God. She is the most eloquent writer and just gets to the heart of the matter - whether it be about food, money, be present, living your life. She really knows what she's talking about.

I've been reading her works for years and also get her newsletters. Recently I received one and I absolutely knew I needed to share it with you.

Word Sy

Book Review by Wendy Aujla

"Tears of Mehndi" is Raminder Sidhu's first debut novel that explores the tight-knit community in Vancouver's Little India.

Raminder opens up the dialogue around the social issues that some South Asian's encounter when caught between two cultures and struggling to follow Indian traditions while embracing the values of the Western culture. This novel is written in a unique way, where the reader is introduced to characters that are searching for their dreams and happiness in Canadian society. The painful stories of the eight fictional women are shared as the author intertwines their lives by weaving one story into another which is not an easy task. The eight women each have unique names where the meaning is provided for the reader to follow their personal story, for instance, Satinder - Truth, Gian - Wisdom, Asha - Hope, Roop - Beauty and so forth.

Nonetheless, Raminder connects the stories of the eight women and others to further highlight how women outside of the circle seem to have some sort of input on their lives. Thus, there are multiple perspectives to what happens in the women's lives especially with the challenges each one endures.
