Shye Ben Tzur & Rajasthan Express Live in Concert!
Shye Ben-Tzur & Rajasthan Express Toronto

One of the most talked-about artists at the 2012 Ashkenaz Festival, Israel's Shye Ben Tzur returns to Toronto!

Having studied Indian classical music for over a decade, and immersed himself in Muslim Qawwali music, Shye Ben Tzur has fashioned a wholly unique fusion of Hebrew and Middle Eastern musical influences with those of the Indian sub-continent.

Working with a cross-cultural ensemble of Rajasthani-Indian and Israeli musicians, his music transcends the seemingly quirky juxtapositions at its core: devotional Qawwali music with Hebrew poetry, Indian classical vocals with Spanish guitar, funky bass with pulsating tabla.

When: Thursday, July 25, 2013
Where: The Mod Club
Time: 9pm
Tickets: $20 in advance, $25 at the door

Stress Less with Supplementation!

I am a huge fan of Adeeva Nutritionals - a Canadian supplement company founded by Dr. James Meschino - my nutrition professor at CMCC as well under whom I studied for my fellowship in Integrative Nutrition.

This month, his focus is on Stress. Here is a tidbit from his recent newsletter of what stress is and how it affects us and what supplements are clinically proven to help mitigate the effects of stress on our bodies:

"It's a known fact that stress and anxiety plague 80% of Americans. Stress manifests itself psychologically and physically, with the more common symptoms being fatigue, headache, sleep disturbances, digestive upset, muscle tension, and irritability. Stress is also known to rob the body of essential vitamins and minerals. A healthy diet and smart supplementation with essential nutrients can help the body fight back. To replace your "nutrient fuel tank", look no further than your high-potency multi-vitamin. Make sure it contains adequate amounts of the following nutrients, by reviewing its ingredients with your healthcare professional.

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's latest motion picture 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag'

Award-winning director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's latest motion picture BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG has been heating up the music charts this summer with three smash hit songs with music from Shankar - Ehsaan - Loy.

The Farhan Akhtar-Sonam Kapoor starrer tells the true story of India's original sports hero Olympian Milkha Singh who became known as the "Flying Sikh" thanks to his incredible 96.5% winning ratio.

'Milkha Singh'- for some the name evokes a faint memory from the pages of history.  All that is most remembered is that Milkha Singh, hailed as the Flying Sikh, was a famous athlete who infamously lost the penultimate race of his life.

"The one who lost the 400 meters finals at the Rome Olympics" is an involuntary response when the name Milkha Singh is mentioned.

The film attempts to understand a catastrophic loss that was deemed a sure victory and explores through the darkness of disgrace; Milkha's redemption, the redemption and catharsis that come when he confronts his past.

Milkha ironically finds himself in a place wherein he had lost his all - Pakistan - a place where he witnessed the bloody massacre of his entire family. The demons hidden in some dark corner of his consciousness come alive.

Travelling Foodie: Desi Eats Abroad

The more I travel the more similarities I see between cultures. During my trip to Europe and Turkey this fall, I came across traditional Arabic desserts, snacks and drinks that looked and tasted very much like their Indian counterparts. Of course, with India's ancient history with the Mughal empire, a crossover was bound to happen. Here is Desi Globetrotter's guide to decoding the names behind these epicurean delights:

Sons of Ram, to Be Showcased in 3D at TAAFI 2013
Sons of Ram
The story of Luv & Kush like never before. Amar Chitra Katha's first animated feature film in stereoscopic 3D.

Amar Chitra Katha has been India's favorite storyteller for more than 45 years and now, its animation division ACK Animation Studios continues to bring this rich legacy to the world of film and TV.

Sons of Ram , their first theatrical feature film (produced in collaboration with Cartoon Network India), continues its international festival rollout at TAAFI 2013, after the successful domestic release across India last November. TAAFI, Toronto's first and foremost International Animation festival, celebrates the many forms of animation from around the world, supporting and nurturing the community that creates this art form.
Sons of Ram will be screened in the presence of its creators on Sunday, 28th July, 2013 at 12:30 noon at the prestigious TIFF Bell Lightbox.

Sons of Ram (written and directed by Kushal Ruia), tells the story of twins Luv and Kush and their journey to their roots, with the great Indian epic RAMAYANA as its backdrop. Complete with a cast of lovable and relatable characters, the film is an epic coming-of-age adventure told with global sensibilities and beautiful art. Both children and adults will love this story for its balance of entertainment with meaningful and relevant themes.

The film received unanimous praise from critics and industry professionals in India, who called it "the best Indian animated film so far" (Vaibhav Kumaresh, Celebrated Indian Animator), "Ruia's storytelling wins you over" (The Times of India), "amazing clarity and breathtaking freshness".

Kushal Ruia, writer/director of "Sons of Ram" & Head, ACK Animation Studios, says, "The genuine outpouring of love and praise for the film's storytelling and characters, on its release in India, was momentous. Now, to have SONS OF RAM play at TAAFI is even more so for me because as a Sheridan Animation alumnus, I learned all I know about animation and film right here!
