Hearts and Arrows with Centre A
Centre A Hearts and Arrows

Join the conversation with Khan Lee and Amy Kazymerchyk on Centre A's current exhibition, hearts and arrows!

Khan and Amy's conversation began a year ago, when they discussed projecting hearts and arrows onto a floating screen on the Saugeen River in rural Ontario. Transplanting this work to a distinct landscape, economy, and culture brought up questions about the work's geographic and temporal specificity.

One evening in early June, while tracking the coordinates of the setting sun in Crab Park, they acknowledged their mutual attentiveness, attachment, and wonder for living on this land- Coast Salish land-that we call Vancouver.

Their conversation at Centre A will begin by reading a series of 'letters' written on their reflections, queries, observations, and concerns about the city. Their dialogue following this introduction will loop through thoughts on labour, craft, discipline, human and economic migration and displacement, perception, vision, and light.

When: Saturday, July 20, 2013
Where: Centre A
Time: starts at 3pm
Tickets: This is a FREE event

How do I access credit? New Canadians face learning curve
TD Credit Article

Every year, thousands of people immigrate to Canada in search of new opportunities and a better life. Today, Statistics Canada estimates that immigrants account for more than one-in-five Canadians and projects that by 2055 immigration will account for 90 per cent of the country's population growth. But figuring out how things work in a new country can be challenging, from locating new schools and communities to navigating the banking system.

According to a poll from TD Canada Trust, most newcomers said they did not know how to open a bank account (47%), apply for a credit card (58%) or mortgage (87%) or send money to family overseas (72%) in their first three months in Canada. The biggest surprise New Canadians encountered setting up their finances was the credit rating system (24%) and not having access to credit right away (23%).

The more I travel the more similarities I see between cultures. During my trip to Europe and Turkey this fall, I came across traditional Arabic desserts, snacks and drinks that looked and tasted very much like their Indian counterparts. Of course, with India's ancient history with the Mughal empire, a crossover was bound to happen.

Here is Desi Globetrotter's guide to decoding the names behind these epicurean delights: Zlabias = Jalebis  On my last day in Paris, I came across a small Tunisian bakery in the Latin Quarter. These twisted, bright orange, syrupy sweets in the window display caught my eye. Jalebis have been traced back to India, but have made their way to the Middle East and North Africa during the Muslim rule.

Motherhood full of contradiction: Nandita Das

Terming motherhood as a "contradiction" of life, actor-director Nandita Das said the happy stereotypical perception about motherhood is very different in reality.

Das was speaking at a book launch of an anthology "Of Mother and Other" at the Indian International Centre here.

"When I was pregnant, no one told me how many difficulties one actually has to face. Everybody is happy and they congratulate you, but nobody shares the issues of motherhood," the actor said.
