First love in anyone's life holds a special place especially if the memory is filled with the vibrant musings of the city that you grew up in. Benaras holds a special place in Kundan's heart, because not only did he grow up there, but also because it gave him Zoya.

Quiet, beautiful, Zoya was the girl of his dreams. He would follow her everyday to the bazaar, back to her house till one day he mustered the courage to speak to her and tell her his true feelings - his 13 year old heart, smitten by her simplicity.

Raanjhanaa is the story of Kundan, his journey from a 13 year old boy in love who goes on to become a committed, spirited young man. It's the story of love.

Starring: Dhanush, Sonam Kapoor, Abhay Deol
Director: Anand L Rai

Salimah My Body My Temple

Imagine your liver.  It sits in the upper right area of your abdomen, protected by your rib cage.  This reddish brown organ weighs about 2 kilograms and is does everything from help digest the French fries you ate last night, helps to heal the cut on your baby finger and stores that extra bit of glucose you used up running for the GO Train.  It's a multitasker for sure.

In both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the liver, ensures energy and blood flow smoothly throughout the body. It also regulates bile secretion, stores blood, and is connected with the tendons, nails, and eyes.

Emotions like anger, resentment, frustration, irritability, bitterness, "flying off the handle" are also connected to the liver.

Both TCM and ayurveda attribute liver challenges to heat that is trapped in the liver, and they seek to clear and cool the organ through lifestyle changes and herbal treatments.

Ayurveda views the liver as "hot" or "pittic" because the fiery, dynamic energy of pitta-one of the three doshas (along with vata and kapha) that regulate the physiological functions of the body-guides and supports these myriad functions of the liver. Too much fiery energy, can accumulate in the liver and lead to physical problems.

Ayurveda describes symptoms caused by excess pitta that are very similar to what is called "liver fire" in TCM: headaches; flushed face; red, burning eyes; acne; nosebleeds; and outbursts of anger. Ayurveda adds inflammation, allergies, and symptoms of indigestion (like heartburn) to the list.

Live for Your Liver

Overall, both ancient wisdom and modern science agree that how we live has a huge effect on our livers. So even though you can't avoid chemical contaminants completely, you can keep your liver healthy if you just take care of it by following these 5 suggestions:

Eat Light

  • Eat good-quality food when you are hungry. Avoid overeating (more liver burden) and refined or heavily processed food.

Move your Bowels
  • High-fiber diets help keep the bowels, liver, and blood clean by facilitating elimination. Drink water throughout the day.  And if you drink coffee or tea, add a glass of water for each.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia Seeds!

Have you eaten Chia seeds? If so, good on you! You've consumed a true superfood! Chia seeds, which are native to Mexico and Guatemala is an ancient seed that packs a nutritional punch! Its loaded with Omega-3 fatty acids, fibre, manganese, calcium and phosphorus!

You can find chia seeds in most health foods stores and can be found in white, darkbrown and black. But avoid the red chia seeds as they are immature seeds or even the black seeds that are smaller than average - those are called weed seeds. Consuming them is EASY - they can be added to anything and won't change the flavour of your dish! And the great thing about them (in my opinion) is if added to a liquid they puff up and form a creamy, gelatinous sphere around them that are so fun to eat! I personally use them in a little bit of coconut milk with some fruit and organic maple syrup to satisfy a dessert craving, because it becomes almost pudding like.

Here are some added benefits of chia seeds:

  • combats type 2 diabetes by slowing digestion
  • fights belly fat by stabilizing blood sugar
  • adds fibre to your diet
  • provides accessible vegetarian omega 3 fatty acids
  • packs in protein along with everything else!

Try them out and see how great they are! You'll love having this superfood in your pantry!

Travelling Foodie: Desi Eats Abroad

The more I travel the more similarities I see between cultures. During my trip to Europe and Turkey this fall, I came across traditional Arabic desserts, snacks and drinks that looked and tasted very much like their Indian counterparts. Of course, with India's ancient history with the Mughal empire, a crossover was bound to happen. Here is Desi Globetrotter's guide to decoding the names behind these epicurean delights:

Zlabias = Jalebis

On my last day in Paris, I came across a small Tunisian bakery in the Latin Quarter. These twisted, bright orange, syrupy sweets in the window display caught my eye.

A Passage to Bombay and Beyond...

Are there any stories left to tell about India's most fascinating city?

Yes, most definitely yes, says Veena Gokhale, author of Bombay Wali and other stories, recently released by Canadian publisher Guernica Editions.

Bombay, like New York, Paris, London and other world cities, is teeming with tantalizing tales!

"Six of the 12 stories in my book reflect the slum-speckled, City of Gold I knew in the 1980s," says Gokhale.

"I was a college student and then a journalist in Bombay, and it had not been renamed Mumbai then.

I wrote the stories in Toronto nearly 10 years later. I was doing my Masters at York University and the stories started tumbling out.

Listen Up Blog

The soundtrack of director Rohan Sippy's forthcoming romantic-comedy "Nautanki Saala" has a long list of songs and composers have managed to blend elements of romance and comedy very well in the songs. The eight original songs and their reprised, unplugged and remix versions are likely to woo music lovers.

However, a couple of tracks would have niche listeners as they won't appeal to the masses.

The album starts with romantic number "Mera mann kehne laga". Sung by Tulsi Kumar, the soothing, happy song can make you dream. The lyrics are dipped in romance and beautifully describe a lover's feelings.

Motherhood full of contradiction: Nandita Das

Terming motherhood as a "contradiction" of life, actor-director Nandita Das said the happy stereotypical perception about motherhood is very different in reality.

Das was speaking at a book launch of an anthology "Of Mother and Other" at the Indian International Centre here.

"When I was pregnant, no one told me how many difficulties one actually has to face. Everybody is happy and they congratulate you, but nobody shares the issues of motherhood," the actor said.
