October 19, 2012

Dear Members,

Welcome to this special exclusive edition of MyBindi's newsletter!

This newsletter is a special tribute to Menaka Thakkar.  I am always inspired by this soft spoken, gracious and elegant person who has created a legacy not just for herself and her art but is the one who first put South Asian performing arts on the map in Canada! Her dance school, Nrtyakala, has established artists and launched successful careers in dance.

This Saturday, Menaka Thakkar will be awarded the 2012 Walter Carsen Prize.  The award recognizes the highest level of artistic excellence and distinguished career achievement by Canadian artists whose careers are in dance, theatre, or music.

The award will be presented by Robert Sirman, Director and CEO of Canada Council for the Arts.  After the awards ceremony there will be a "Remembrance of Walter Carsen", who passed away Monday, October 8th at 100 years of age, given by Veronica Tennant.

The evening's performance will be dedicated to Mr. Carsen and will feature the Menaka Thakkar Dance Company performing five works which range from traditional, classical, contemporary, and modern Indian dance.
